SoCon Men's Outdoor Track & Field Capsules for March 11-12

March 13, 2006 - Lance breaks school record in outdoor track & field opener

Michael Lance completed the 400 meters in a school-record time to highlight a Wofford trio's performances Saturday at the outdoor track & field season-opening Buc Invitational in Charleston, S.C.

 

Lance completed the event in 51.28 to finish 12th and to edge the previous school mark of 51.50 set by Brandon Berry in 2004.

 

He garnered his second 12th-place result of the meet in the 200m with a time of 23.63.

 

Adam Lesko also participated in both events, registering a 16th-place time in the 200 (23.93) and an 18th-place finish in the 400 (52.90).

 

The other Terrier competing was Jason McElveen, who recorded an 18th-place time of 24.18 in the 200.

 

Wofford will next participate in the Weems Baskin Relays this weekend in Columbia, S.C.

 

March 12, 2006 - CofC's Chambless Sets School Record at Buc Invitational

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Summer Chambless set a new College of Charleston record for the women's pole vault at the 2006 Buc Invitational Saturday with a mark of 11 feet, three and one half inches.

 

Chambless' mark was good enough for first place in the event as the Cougars begin the outdoor track and field season.  Chambless also had another first place finish in the javelin throw after she recorded a distance of 99 feet. 

 

Wells Trompeter and Heather Clark recorded first and third place finishes respectively in the 1500 meter run with times of 5:04.61 and 5:14.13.  Trompeter also added a third place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:28.65. 

 

Ashley Arnold notched a second place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:07.21.  Charleston's 4x400 relay team earned a time of 4:07.72 which was good enough for first. 

 

For Charleston's Max Gustaltis and Aubrey Darnell the men's 3000 meter steeplechase was highly productive as they finished first and second respectively with times of 10:23.34 and 10:33.27.

 

The Cougars will next be in action at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 17-18.

 

March 10, 2006 - Bulldog Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season with Solid Day at Coastal Carolina Invitational

Conway, S.C. - The Citadel's men's and women's track and field programs got a head start on the outdoor season, competing in the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway Friday evening as the Bulldogs had solid outings in the meet's opening events. Stephanie McNeill placed sixth in the hammer with a throw of 150' 4" while Laura Hewston finished fourth and Amanda Rawl placed fifth in the 10,000m run with times of 41:17.59 and 43:15.93, respectively.

McNeill's performance led the Cadets in Friday's competition while Laura Phelan added to the women's efforts with a throw of 115' 6" in the javelin, placing her sixth overall. Allison Taylor finished 14th in the javelin with a throw of 96' 2".

In the men's hammer, Rick Austin and Alex Croskey finished 11-12 as Austin had a throw of 142' 6" and Croskey's throw traveled a distance of 137' 4". Zach DiBois placed 16th in the event with a throw of 133' 3".

Meanwhile, Monique Edwards registered a top 15 performance on the day, throwing a mark of 130' 3" in the women's hammer, good enough for 12th place.

March 11, 2006  - Marcus Butler Runner-Up in 800m as The Citadel Records 27 Top-10 Finishes at Coastal Carolina Invitational

Conway, S.C. - The Citadel's Stephanie McNeill won the shot put at the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a throw of 46' 8.25" while the Bulldogs recorded 27 Top-10 Finishes and broke seven school records Saturday. Jodi Whittle finished fourth in the 100m dash, setting a new school record with a time of 12.32 and seventh in the 200m dash while Marcus Butler was the runner-up in the 800m run.

McNeill's throw of 46' 8.25" (14.23m) in the shot put beat out runner-up Ashley Camden of Radford, besting Camden's throw by almost two feet. That mark in the shot topped her own school record by more than four feet and fell just two inches shy of being a NCAA Regional qualifying mark. McNeill set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 150' 4" (45.82m), besting her previous mark, set in 2005, by more than 16 feet.

Tosha Sanders also had a good throw in the shot put with a mark of 36' 11.75" (11.27m). Sanders posted a top-10 finish and set a school record of her own as she recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.42. That time in the 100m hurdles beats her own school record that she set in 2005 (15.63).

"It was a very exciting start to our outdoor season," said head coach Jody Huddleston. "We hope to keep our momentum going as we head into this next weekend's match at the University of South Carolina."

Jodi Whittle had a solid day, placing in the top-10 in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Whittle placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 12.32 and her time of 25.31 in the 200m dash wsas good enough for seventh place.

Megan Jenkins also posted two top-10 finishes on the day, with an eighth-place run of 2:26.37 in the 800m and a sixth-place time of 4:59.40 in the 1500m run. Both of Jenkins' times set new school records as the freshman from Papillion, Neb., continues to be an impressive force in the middle distance events for the Bulldogs.

Sarah Strickland and Erin Ritter placed fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase. Strickland ran a school record time of 12:11.40 while Ritter crossed the finish line at 12:57.52.

Sanders, Whittle, Miriam Crawford and Christine DeVasto teamed up for a 4x100m relay time of 49.57, placing sixth in the event.

On the men's side, Marcus Butler recorded the highest finish of any male Bulldog, running a time of 1:57.73 as he finished just over two seconds behind 800m champion Jarrell Warthen of Radford (1:55.47).Thomas Pressley's time of 10.92 was good enough for eighth in the 100m dash, adding to The Citadel's top 10 accolades on the day.

Pressley added one more top-10 finish later in the day, teaming up with Wes Merriweather, Quintin Wright and Cameron Easley for a fourth-place finish in the 4x100m relay with a time of 42.11. Meanwhile, Butler, Jon Valejo, Dan Sagmiller and Thomas Cummings ran a time of 3:24.21 in the 4x400m relay as the Cadets finished sixth.

Steven Craig placed eighth in the 10,000m run with a time of 36:18.40 while Will Wilson and Charles Kutz finished 3-4 in the 3000m steeplechase. Wilson ran a time of 10:05.24 while Kutz finished with a time of 10:19.02. In the 400m hurdles, Jamel Brown finished ninth with a time of 57.33.

Shaquill Smith recorded the second runner-up finish for the men's team as his 6' 6" (1.98m) height in the high jump put him two inches above third place.

Alex Croskey threw the shot put 45' 0.5" (13.73m) as he placed sixth while Rick Austin finished ninth in the discus with a mark of 139' 6" (42.51m). Austin rounded out the men's excellent performances Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 162' 10" (49.63m).

The Citadel returns to action on March 17-18, traveling to Columbia, S.C., for the Weems Baskin Relays at the University of South Carolina.
