SPARTANBURG, SC ? John Brandt hit a pair of home runs and freshman Reid McElveen allowed just one run through six innings as Wofford College defeated Quinnipiac 10-1 Monday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
The 10-run outburst comes a day after Wofford (13-8) had scored a 25-15 win over Davidson. It marks the most runs scored by the Terriers in back to back games since 1994.
The loss dropped Quinnipiac to 0-4 on the season. The Bobcats were Northeast Conference champions in 2005 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
Wofford scored all the runs it would need with a two-run first inning. Bradford Eaves led off the game by reaching on an error, moved to second on an infield groundout and advanced to third on a fly out by Shane Kirkley. After a walk to Brandt, Eaves scored on a drag bunt by Stephen Johnson. Brandt moved to third on the bunt and then scored on an infield error.
Quinnipiac scored its only run in the second as Wilson Matos hit a solo homer to left.
Wofford added two more runs in the second. Chuck Eller was hit by a pitch, moved to second on an infield out, reached third on a single by Eric Sturkie and scored on an infield single by Eaves. Sturkie would eventually score on a wild pitch.
Brent Pearce singled to lead off the fourth inning and after stealing second, scored on a double off the leftfield wall by Adam Wood.
Brand hit a solo homer in the fifth to push Wofford’s lead to 7-1. With two outs in the sixth, Wood drew a walk and Kirkly hit a two-run homer. Brandt followed with his second homer of the game, also a solo shot.
McElveen, making his first career start, sent six innings and scattered eight hits. He walked two and struckout four in raising his record to 2-0. Bobcat starter Tyler Brett allowed nine runs, seven of them earned, in five and two-thirds innings of work.
Ryan Beaton relieved McElveen in the seventh and yielded just one hit over two innings. Closer J.D. Melton pitched a three up, three down inning in the ninth.
Eaves single extended his hitting streak to six games. Kirkley was three for four with three RBI for the Terriers.
Matos had two hits for the Bobcats as did centerfielder Tim Binkoski.
Wofford will host Indiana -Purdue at Fort Wayne (IUPUFW) in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 at King Field.
