SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Elon’s Chris Price the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while Western Carolina’s Tyler Sexton was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
In three league games last week, Price was 7-for-12 (.583) with nine RBIs and four runs scored. Price, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI in a non-conference game with Wake Forest, also drew a pair of walks on the week and was hit by a pitch. The senior outfielder from Asheville, NC, had three extra base hits -- two doubles and a home run -- and finished the week with an .813 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base percentage. In the first game of the Western Carolina series, Price went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. He then closed out the series going 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored and five RBIs.
The Catamounts’ Sexton picked up a win over Elon on Saturday, going 8.0 innings and striking out a career-high 11 batters. The left-handed pitcher from High Point, NC, scattered seven hits (only one extra base hit) over his eight innings and surrendered one run while walking one.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Nick DeRose (was 10-for-15 with 10 runs in five non-conference games), College of Charleston’s Alex Garabedian (drove in five runs and hit .583 in series with St. John’s), The Citadel’s Zach Brown (6-for-12 with five doubles and five RBIs), Davidson’s Alden Crissey (hit .333 in four games with two home runs and drove in eight runs), Furman’s Ben Terry (went 11-for-16 with five RBIs in four non-conference games), Georgia Southern’s Chris Shehan (9-for-15 in three games, including five hits in one game against Coastal Carolina), UNC Greensboro’s Jermaine Mitchell (hit .524 on the week with two RBIs) and Wofford’s Bradford Eaves (9-for-18 with six runs and four RBIs).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were Appalachian State’s Josh Fish (1-0 with two saves in Canisius series), The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn (struck out eight and gave up two runs on six hits in eight innings), Davidson’s Rob Wilson (fanned seven in win over Wofford, retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced), Elon’s Matt Chastain (earned win over WCU, allowing seven hits and three runs in six innings), UNC Greensboro’s Nick Starnes (struck out four batters in six innings of work in win over Kent State) and Wofford’s Austin Redwine (went six innings in win over Davidson, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out five).
