Southern Conference Women's Tennis Results from Mar. 12

Furman 6, UNC Greensboro 1

 

GREENSBORO, NC ? Emily Wade earned a straight-set win over Marti Morris, but it was the lone point of the day for UNCG as the Spartans dropped a 6-1 decision to Furman in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.

 

Wade defeated Morris by identical 6-4 scores to earn UNCG’s lone victory of the afternoon.

 

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they host Elon in another Southern Conference match-up.

Davidson 7, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga., -- Davidson blanked Georgia Southern 7-0 in both teams' women's tennis Southern Conference opener Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Wildcats to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Eagles fall to 3-8 and 1-1 in the SoCon.

After claiming the doubles point, Davidson continued its impressive play winning each of the six singles' matches in straight sets.

The Wildcats concluded their three-match road trip 2-1 and will return home Wednesday, March 15 as they host Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. Georgia Southern will play conference foe UNC Greensboro Sunday, March 19.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The women’s tennis team won its second straight match Sunday, defeating Birmingham-Southern College 5-2.

The Lady Mocs won the doubles point and four of six singles matches to improve their overall record to 4-8.

UTC took the 1-0 lead after doubles victories at No. 1 and No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match was not concluded.

The Lady Mocs won the first through fourth singles matches. Lindsey Ballard clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Kathryn Carroll.

Anastasia Zhukova won her 12th consecutive dual match of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Jennifer Williams. Talita Bragato and Bonnie Adams claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

Birmingham-Southern (5-3) earned its two points from wins by Kate Lambert at No. 5 singles and Laura Kirk at No. 6 singles.

UTC returns to Southern Conference competition Saturday, hosting Wofford at 11 a.m. and Appalachian State Sunday at noon at the UTC Tennis Complex. Admission is free.

Wofford 6, Northern Colorado 1

The Wofford women's tennis team returned home Sunday for its first match at the Reeves Center since Feb. 17 and garnered a 6-1 victory against Northern Colorado in non-conference action. The Terriers had played four-straight contests on the road in between the home dates.

Seniors Ellen Rogers and Tara Hartness helped spark Wofford to wins in five of the six singles matches. Rogers defeated Karen Groll 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot, while Hartness earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory versus Meredith Krystofik at the No. 2 seed.

Freshman Ashley Page then posted a 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Christina Shelly during the No. 4 contest, while sophomore Adriane Hodges registered a 6-1, 6-1 win versus Kellie Crail at the No. 5 position. Classmate Lauren Prickett rounded out the Terrier singles victories with a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the No. 6 match against Tonya Bunting for her fourth-straight win.

Hartness and Rogers won their team-leading eighth doubles contest of the season with an 8-1 victory against Krystofik and Shelly at the No. 1 slot. The doubles point fell in Wofford's favor with an 8-4 triumph at the No. 3 position when Prickett and freshman Cayley Wetzig tallied the win versus Bunting and Crail.

The Terriers improve to 7-5 overall with the win, while the Bears fall to 3-6.

Wofford will continue to play at home for its next match when it hosts Charlotte at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
