The Southern Conference named UNC Greensboro’s Gwen Johnson its softball Player of the Week, while Georgia Southern’s Melissa Laliberte was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12. The honor was Johnson’s second of the season.
Johnson, a senior centerfielder, hit .538 (7-for-13) last week for the Spartans, who went 2-3 at the Winthrop Invitational. Johnson had three home runs, one double, seven runs scored and eight RBIs in the five games. A native of Boston, VA, Johnson in the five outings also totaled 17 bases, procured a 1.308 slugging percentage and a .647 on-base percentage.
Johnson acquired a hit in four of the five contests, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs plated, a home run and four RBIs in the Spartans’ 10-2 win over South Carolina State on Saturday.
Georgia Southern’s Laliberte pitched in only one contest last week, but tossed a three-hit shutout of North Florida in the Eagles’ 3-0 victory last Wednesday in the second game of a twinbill with the Ospreys. The Cobourg, Ontario, Canada native struck out six in the contest to claim her second shutout of the campaign.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Chattanooga’s Ashlan Clarkson (.316 batting average in eight games last week), Elon’s Debbie Zeigler (.556 batting average with one homer and two RBIs in 1-1 week for Phoenix) and Western Carolina’s Allyson McCubbins (.429 batting average, including eight RBIs in seven games last week).
Chattanooga’s Ashley Frizzell also received consideration for Pitcher of the Week. In six appearances for the Lady Mocs last week, Frizzell tallied 24 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched.
