Davidson 6, Georgia Southern 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. The Davidson men's tennis team got back on the winning track by securing their first Southern Conference win of the year with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped the Wildcats three-match losing streak as Davidson improved to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Eagles dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
"It was a great win for our guys and of course nice to get a victory against a league opponent," said associate head coach Scott Briggs. "We were able to bounce back from a tough loss to James Madison on Tuesday, which was a hard loss to take. But, the team regrouped and really worked hard today, and in the end it showed with the solid win."
After starting play off outside, Davidson and Georgia Southern were forced to move its match inside due to a 40 minute rain delay. Once inside at Knobloch Tennis Center, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. It came down to the number three doubles team of senior Joe Cheaney (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) to try and clinch the point, and they did not disappoint. The duo picked up their fourth win of the year and clinched the point for Davidson with a 9-7 win over the Eagles tandem of Daniel Harden and Joris DeWeerdt.
The Wildcats then took over the match by earning victories in five of the six singles matches on the day. Sophomore Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) snapped his five-match losing skid with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Vincent Patry at number one singles, while freshman Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) won his fourth match in the past six with a 7-6, 6-2 win at number three singles.
Senior Daniel Bermeo (Quito, Ecuador), junior John Bolton (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each earned singles wins to help Davidson to the 6-1 win.
Davidson plays one more this weekend when the Wildcats host non-conference opponent the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, Mar. 12 at 1:00 p.m. Richmond is sporting a 7-9 overall record and Davidson is looking to avenge last year's 5-2 loss to Richmond on the Wildcats home court.
