Coastal Carolina 6, College of Charleston 1
Maxine Capewell took the number one singles but that would not be enough as the College of Charleston women’s tennis team fell to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 6-1, this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars fall to 1-4, while the Chanticleers stay undefeated at 3-0.
The match was part of a fundraiser to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The College of Charleston women’s tennis team wore pink shirts and used pink tennis balls for the match. T-shirts and hats were sold as well, with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research.
The Cougars took one of the three doubles matches with Capewell and Ashley Finnegan taking the 7-6 win over Sofie Ahlberg and Sarize Coetzee at the number two spot. Coastal Carolina won at umber one and three for the doubles point.
Capewell defeated Virginie Dinh 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 at number one singles to highlight the Cougar effort this afternoon. Coastal Carolina would take the rest of the singles’ matches for the 6-1 victory.
The College of Charleston travels to Winthrop Feb. 17th for a 2:00 PM match, while Coastal Carolina travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on Winston Salem State at 9:00 AM and North Carolina A&T at 1:00 PM.

Wofford 7, Gardner-Webb 0
With six straight-set wins in singles play and a sweep in doubles action, the Wofford women's tennis team was victorious Wednesday afternoon with a 7-0 triumph at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Terriers started off the day's action with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles slot by Ellen Rogers and Tara Hartness against Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers. At the No. 2 seed, Cayley Wetzig and Laura Lynn Williams handed Monica Walser and Krystina Sigmon an 8-2 defeat.
The sweep was completed with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 position by Adriane Hodges and Lauren Prickett over Sara Zirnheld and Tracy Tonsor.
In singles action, Rogers registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Gomez at the No. 1 slot, while Hartness picked up a 6-0, 6-2 triumph versus Beavers at the No. 2 seed.
A 6-0, 6-0 win occurred during the No. 3 contest as Wetzig was victorious against Walser. At the No. 4 position, Williams posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Sigmon.
Hodges tallied a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Zirnheld at the No. 5 seed, while Prickett tallied a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 versus Tonsor.
The win improves Wofford's record to 2-3, while Gardner-Webb drops to 0-4.
The Terriers will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Mercer at the Reeves Center.

Furman 6, Winthrop 1
Greenville, SC - The 59th ranked Furman women's tennis team evened their record to 2-2 with a 6-1 win over Winthrop Wednesday evening at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Lady Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year with the loss.
In doubles play Shannon Moore and Lauren Osborne got Furman on the board first downing Alexandra Dyckman and Malin Sjoqvist 8-1 in flight two. Furman's 39th ranked doubles team of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris quickly gave the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead with an 8-2 victory over Patricia Coimbra and Ana Paula Novaes at No.1. Furman picked up a win in the flight three doubles match with Jacqueline Eckert and Natasa Manojlovic defeating Paula Takahashi and Larisa Bekmetova 8-5.
Marti Morris and Lauren Osborne quickly gave Furman a 3-0 lead picking up wins in flights two and three respectively. Winthrop got on the board when Ana Paula Novaes downed Shannon Moore 6-1, 6-2 in flight four. Laura Gioia then sealed the victory for Furman with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Patricia Coimbra in flight one. In the final two matches Furman's Bonnie Baird defeated Larisa Bekmetova 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-5 at No5 while fellow Lady Paladin Natasa Manojlovic eased by Alexandra Valarezo 6-1, 6-1 making the final margin 6-1.
The Lady Paladins hit the road for the weekend for matches against Northwestern and Alabama in Evanston, Ill. The Northwestern match is set for Saturday at 7 PM with the Alabama match beginning Sunday at 1 PM.
