CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Michael Keefe, Jake Yost and Israel Silva each won two matches Saturday for the wrestling team and led the Mocs to wins over University of the Cumberlands and Appalachian State.
The Mocs defeated the Patriots 26-11 and beat their Southern Conference rival, the Mountaineers, 29-4. Appalachian State, 8-7-1 and 1-3 in the SoCon, closed out the evening with a 26-22 win over the Cumberlands, now 6-3.
The Mocs, 13-7-1 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, won seven of 10 matches against the Mountaineers. After an ASU forfeit at 125 to start the dual, UTC’s Matt Keller won his 12th consecutive match with a 6-3 decision over Terreyl Williams at 133.
A 23-7 Keefe technical fall over Marcus Cox gave UTC an early 14-0 advantage. Eric Burns got ASU on the scoreboard with a 6-3 win over Aaron Martin at 149. Yost won his second match of the day, defeating Scott Ervin 6-3 at 157.
Lee Roper’s 5-4 win over Justin Otis in the 165-pound match ended the Mountaineers’ scoring as the Mocs closed out the dual with consecutive wins by T.J. Sayers (174), John Davis (184), Lloyd Rogers (197) and Silva (285).
“We went out to try to improve upon what we did in the last match with Appalachian,” UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. “We wrestled well tonight, and we won some close matches. I have told our guys that we have to win the close matches. That is what could be the difference in going to the NCAAs or not. Several of the matches could have gone either way.”
UTC and ASU tied 21-21 in a non-conference match on Nov. 13 at the Mat Jam Duals in Boone, N.C.
Yost scored a 9-1 major decision over The Cumberlands’ Thomas Hutchinson at 157 pounds to clinch the earlier victory for the Mocs. His win pushed UTC’s margin to 14-3 and proved to be too much for the Patriots to overcome.
After Delrico Choates edged UTC’s Javier Maldonado 5-4 on a riding-time point in the first match of the night at 125 pounds, the Mocs reeled off five straight victories for a 17-3 lead. The string included wins by Adam Rains (133), Keefe (141), Martin (149), Yost and Daniel Peterson (165).
Kyle McKee pinned Edward Hernandez in the 184-pound match, and Silva earned a 3-1 overtime victory over Matt Bishop at 285.
UTC returns to SoCon competition next weekend, traveling to VMI Friday and to Davidson Saturday.

Davidson 27, Franklin & Marshall 22 (Feb. 4)
Davidson 24, George Mason 22 (Feb. 4)
LANCASTER, Pa. ? Coming off its first Southern Conference victory in 21 years, Davidson extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches with triumphs over Franklin & Marshall (27-22) and George Mason (24-22) in wrestling action at the Mayser Center Saturday afternoon. With the wins, the Wildcats improve to 6-5-1 on the 2005-06 campaign.
Davidson’s current win streak is the second longest in school-history as Bob Patnesky’s Wildcats reeled off six consecutive victories a season ago.
In their opener with Franklin & Marshall, the Wildcats’ Patrick Coman gave Davidson a 6-0 lead by pinning Doug Ritchey in 1:50 for his fifth victory by fall of the season. The Diplomats cut the deficit to 6-3 with a win at 133, but couldn’t inch closer as Davidson stretched it’s advantage to 23-3 thanks to a pair of pins from Jim Avola (141) and Matt Pendle (157) and a Matt Leonard (149), 8-4 defeat of Al Giaforti. During the spurt, the Wildcats were awarded two points following an Andrew Smith disqualification for an unsportsmanlike conduct in his match with Pendle.
After dropping the 165-pound bout, Davidson’s Marcus Boyd ran his winning streak to six straight and sealed the dual for the Wildcats with a major decision victory over James Shulz at 174 pounds.
Tied 3-3 with George Mason, Davidson’s Jim Avola broke the deadlock with a slim, 2-1 victory over Chris Cartella at 141 pounds, followed by consecutive Wildcat wins by forfeit to extend their lead to 18-3. The Patriots’ Tyler Tisdell cut into the Wildcat advantage with a 15-5 major decision over Jimmy Colavita, but Boyd (174) stretched his streak and the lead to the largest of the dual (24-7) by pinning Ken Jackson in 5:25. Five of Boyd’s last seven wins have come by way of fall as he improves 10-1 on the season.
With two forfeits awarded to George Mason at 197 pounds and heavyweight, Davidson’s Sam O’Hair had to win or avoid a loss by tech. fall or pin at 184 pounds to assure the Wildcats their fifth straight victory. The Patriots’ Randy Oats battled the entire bout, but couldn’t manage better than an 8-5 win.
Davidson will look to tie last season’s win streak tomorrow afternoon as it battles Drexel on the road. The dual with the Dragons is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
Note - In the F&M-Davidson match, Andrew Smith was DQ'd and Davidson was awarded two extra team points for flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct on Smith.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Drexel ended Davidson's five-match winning streak with a 28-9 victory over the Wildcats in wrestling action Sunday afternoon. The victory for the Dragons set a new single-season record for triumphs in a campaign with 18. Davidson falls to 6-6-1 on the year.
The Dragons jumped out to a quick 16-3 advantage winning five of the first six bouts. Avola, a junior from Montague, N.J., improves to 13-2 overall and 11-1 in dual competition.

Boyd, like fellow teammate Avola, has dropped just one dual match this season as he also sits at 11-1.
The Wildcats only other win of the afternoon came from freshman Sam O?Hair, who defeated Justin Terhune, 4-3, at 184-pounds.
Despite Davidson's Matt Pendle dropping his 157-pound bout 9-7, he battled Ryan Hluschak, ranked 19th in the latest Amateur Wrestling News Poll to the very end.
Davidson returns to the mats Saturday, Feb. 11 when it hosts Southern Conference foe Chattanooga at 6 p.m. The Dragons will be in action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as they battle Millersville at 7 p.m.

VMI Finishes Fourth at All-Academy Championships (Feb. 4)
KINGS POINT, N.Y. ? Sophomore Tommy Cunningham and junior Scott Buhman paced the Keydet wrestling team at the All-Academy Championships Saturday afternoon, leading VMI to a fourth-place finish among the eight competing schools.
Navy claimed their record sixth team title in the 12th Annual All-Academy Championship, followed by Army, The Citadel, VMI, Air Force, Coast Guard, and a tie between the Norwich University and the hosts, Merchant Marine.
Buhman continued his fine junior campaign, notching his best tournament showing of the year, going 2-1 in the heavyweight class to improve his overall record to 20-11 this season. Cunningham, the top seed at 157 lbs., used a technical fall and a pin to reach the final before dropping a tough 5-3 decision to Army’s Brian Rowan.
Junior Corry Murray lost only his second match of the season, as he ran his record to 11-2 overall by posting a pair of pins and a major decision to come in third at 184 lbs. His lone loss of the day came in the championship semifinals, where he lost 5-1 to Navy’s Jonny Kane, the bracket’s second seed.
The Keydets also received fourth-place finishes from sophomore Dustin McCabe at 174 and Chris Hardy at 165. The Keydets return to action on Friday evening, when they host SoCon foe Chattanooga at the Thunderdome at 7:30 p.m.
