Appalachian State 7, Lees-McRae 0 (Feb. 4)

 

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Appalachian State University women's tennis team won all nine matches Saturday to sweep Lees-McRae, 7-0, to open the 2006 season.

Sophomore Frances Blanton (Raleigh, N.C.), senior Leanne Shutt (Roswell, Ga.), and freshmen Kendall Graves (Wilmington, N.C.) and Anna Cotton (Wilmington, N.C.) each picked up two wins in Appalachian’s young lineup Saturday.

Blanton defeated Jenna Simpson, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles position. She teamed up with senior Lyndsey Free (Marietta, Ga.) to defeat Simpson and Katherine Smith, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles.

Shutt teamed with freshman Megan Decamara (Boone, N.C.), to defeat Brittney Sherrill and Christine Calvert, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles. Shut won by default at No. 6 singles.

At No. 1 singles, senior Victoria Moody (Columbia, S.C.) led the way with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of Smith. Cotton defeated Calvert, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Graves defeated Sherrill, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.

Fellow freshman, Mallory Cook (Laurinburg, N.C.) picked up the other singles with for ASU with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Rebecca Payne at the No. 5 spot.

The Mountaineers continue their opening weekend as they take on Radford, Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. in Radford, Va.

College of Charleston 7, James Madison 0 (Feb. 4)

 

The College of Charleston swept all six singles and all three doubles matches to earn the 7-0 win over James Madison in women’s tennis action this afternoon on the campus of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

The Cougars improve to 1-2 on the year, while James Madison drops its season-opener and goes to 0-1 overall.

Highlighting the doubles matches was an 8-0 win at number two doubles as Maxine Capewell and Ashley Finnegan defeated JMU’s Barrett Donner and Anna Khoor.

In singles play the Cougars were just as successful, taking all the matches in straight sets. The toughest match of the day was at number six where Kelsey Darnell defeated Catherine Phillips 6-3, 7-6 (5).

The Cougars stay in Williamsburg and face William & Mary, currently ranked 20th in the nation with a 3-1 record, at 10:00 AM Sunday the 5th..

Davidson 7, Gardner-Webb 0 (Feb. 4)

Davidson 5, South Carolina State 2 (Feb. 4)

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Davidson only needed the minimum sets to blank in-state rival Gardner-Webb, 7-0, before edging nationally-ranked South Carolina State, 5-2 in women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Facility. With the victories, the Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the season, while Gardner-Webb and South Carolina State remain winless on the year at 0-2 and 0-1 respectively.

After breezing to 8-3 victories in both the doubles’ matches against Gardner-Webb, Davidson continued its impressive play winning all six of the singles’ matches. Highlighting the morning session were wins by each of the Wildcat freshmen. Both Michelle Fanney and Lora Dushanova recorded their first singles’ victories of the season, while Emily Wilkinson notched her second win of the 2006 campaign.

Both Kim Whelan and Kate Levitt of the Wildcats also cruised to singles’ victories allowing just one point between the two of their competitors.

Like they did in the opening match with Gardner-Webb, the Wildcats’ grabbed the doubles’ point with 8-6 and 8-3 wins at the top spots respectively to grab an early 1-0 lead against South Carolina State.

Levitt continued her solid play in her afternoon match recording a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vesna Popac of South Carolina State to stretch the ?Cats’ team advantage to 2-0. Despite dropping her opening set, Whelan battled back to bring Davidson within one point of securing the team victory with a defeat of Milana Borisev at the number three spot.

The 70th ranked South Carolina State Bulldogs quickly cut the deficit to 3-2 when Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodenzo each rallied from one set down to knock off the Wildcats top seeds. Davidson’s Dushanova, a native of Silven, Bulgaria, secured the victory for the Wildcats with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yana Lytkina to remain unbeaten on the day. With the match in the book, Meredith Skeeters’ match with Gisel Brito was the fourth match to go the distance with Skeeters claiming the final two sets 7-6, 7-6 for another Wildcat triumph.

South Carolina State was the fourth nationally-ranked opponent to face Davidson on the courts this spring. The Wildcats have claimed two of their four matches against teams charted in the latest ITA National Polls.

Following a full week away from competition the Wildcats return to the courts Sunday, Feb. 12 in a 1 p.m. match at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Elon 7, Queens College 0 (Feb. 4)

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory in its season-opening match with Queens on Saturday afternoon from the Olde Forest Raquet Club. Elon now sits at 1-0 on the year, while Queens dipped to 0-3.

For the victorious Phoenix in doubles play, Evin Prelec and Kelly Fleck defeated Merissa Rock and Skye Powell 8-2 at number one. Melissa Holland and Whitney Butcher teamed up at number two doubles to knock off Jessica Burke and Lindsey King by the same 8-2. The Phoenix finished off the doubles sweep when Elizabeth Kernodle and Alli Benton beat the Royals' Lee-Deane Elmore and Kristen McCulley 8-0 at number three.

The Phoenix cruised through the single matches as well, winning all six spots. At number one, Fleck defeated Rock 6-1, 6-0. Kernodle claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number two over Powell at number two. At number three, Holland picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Burke. The number four singles match was the only one to go three set, but Elon's Butcher pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over King. Benton earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Elmore at number five and Katie Nicholson grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 decision over McCulley at number six.

The Elon women will return to the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 8 when they visit North Carolina A&T for a 2:00 p.m. match.

UNC Greensboro 5,  Liberty 2 (Feb. 4)

LYNCHBURG, VA ? UNC Greensboro evened its spring record at 2-2 on Saturday night with a 5-2 win over Liberty in women’s tennis action.

 

UNCG’s Lisa Suggs picked up a three-set win in singles’ action while Erica Zabkar and Lourdes Moran earned easy straight-set victories. Suggs also teamed up with Emily Wade to also earn a 9-8 doubles’ victory, winning the tie-breaker by a 10-5 score.

 

The Spartans return to action on Sunday, February 19 when they face Indiana in a match to be played at Wake Forest.

A loss in doubles action coupled with a pair of defeats in singles play resulted in a 3-0 loss for the Wofford women's tennis team Saturday afternoon against East Carolina.

The Pirates gained momentum with a 6-4, 6-1 doubles win by Kirstin Buchanan and Presley Thomas over Adriane Hodges and Laura Lynn Williams.

In singles action, two Terrier freshmen lost their matches. Rookie Cayley Wetzig dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the No. 3 slot to Mireia Gol. At the No. 4 position, fellow freshman Ashley Page fell 6-2, 6-2 to Luiza Borges.

The No. 1 and No. 2 singles contests featuring Wofford's senior duo of Ellen Rogers and Tara Hartness, respectively, did not finish.

The two teams played the match in a 4-1 format, which includes four singles matches and one doubles contest. The first team to three points is declared the winner.

East Carolina also won its second match of the day, 3-2, over Georgia State to improve its record to 5-1 on the season. The Terriers fall to 1-2 and will battle Georgia State in the nightcap.

After trailing 2-1, the Georgia State women's tennis team rallied for a 3-2 victory against Wofford Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The two teams played the match in a 4-1 format, which includes four singles matches and one doubles contest. The first team to three points is declared the winner. The Terriers started off the action with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory in doubles play by Adriane Hodges and Ashley Page against Brittany Smith and Kiera Strickland. As singles play was being contested, senior Tara Hartness garnered Wofford's lone win in the four matches. She knocked off Martina Nitkova at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-4. Her win gave the Terriers the lead. In order to claim the triumph, the Panthers earned two three-set wins. At the No. 3 slot, Rachel Malina recorded a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Wofford freshman Cayley Wetzig. The decisive match was at the No. 1 seed. Georgia State's Anne Breiholtz came-from-behind to register a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against Ellen Rogers. The Terriers fall to 1-3 on the season with the loss, while the Panthers improve to 1-1.
