Tallahassee, FL - The Furman men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to Nebraska Friday night, but bounced back for a 5-2 win over Pennsylvania on Saturday. The victory gave the Paladins their first win on the year, taking a 1-3 record into tomorrow's match against Florida State.
In the Friday match against Nebraska, Furman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk teamed up for an 8-3 win over James Clow and Adrian Szatmary at No.2 and in flight three Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman downed Renato Melo and Joerg Barthel 8-1. Nebraska shook off the early deficit and went on to win four of the six singles matches to make the final score 4-3. Picking up wins for the Paladins were Andy Juc in flight two and Brian Crook at No.6.
Saturday's match against Pennsylvania began the same as the Nebraska match with Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk pairing for a victory and Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman doing the same. Entering the singles portion of the match with a 1-0 lead, Furman added four singles matches to the win column, giving the Paladins a 5-2 victory for the day. In flight one Furman's Ben Pauluhn downed Jason Pinsky 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 while fellow Paladin Daniel Knause defeated Joseph Lok 6-4, 6-4 in flight four. Playing at No. 5 Furman freshman Bo Ladyman eased by Jimmy Fairbanks 6-3, 6-1 and Alex Doan edged Brandon O'Gara 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 for the final Paladin victory.
The Furman men return to action on Sunday with a 2:00 PM match against Florida State in Tallahassee, FL.

RICHMOND, Ky. --- The men’s tennis team blanked Eastern Kentucky 7-0 Saturday in Richmond, Ky.
The Mocs won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
In singles competition, the Mocs took straight set victories in all but one match.
Mark Fynn defeated Lars Gratzki 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Ryan Fitzgerald beat Vadzim Ivanis 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2, and Artyom Vlasenko eased past Mel Segota at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0.
The bottom half of the order was no different as Badr Bouabdellah won a 6-4, 6-3 match at No. 4 over Frederico Goncalves. Razvan Axente defeated Nic Brenner 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, and Michael Hangstefer got past Mario Simic at No. 6, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
UTC improves to 2-1 overall and visits No. 32-ranked Vanderbilt Friday.

North Florida 5, Georgia Southern 2 (Feb.4)
STATESBORO ? The home opener for the Georgia Southern Men’s Tennis team was ruined by the University of North Florida Saturday (Feb. 4), when the Ospreys took the match 5-2.
The Eagles (0-2) captured both of their points in singles play. Playing in the No. 2 spot, senior Vincent Patry defeated UNF’s Matias Sigal 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Joris De Weerdt also played well in a hard-fought bout with German Escallon of North Florida, winning 6-3, 6-7(3), 1-0(10) from No. 4.
The beginning of the match was delayed approximately thirty minutes by rain, and once underway, windy conditions persisted. UNF took all three doubles matches to earn the first overall point. The tandem of Patry and freshman Philip Prins fell to Leonardo Gomes and German Escallon 8-6 in the No. 1 spot. The pairs of senior Lasha Janashia and De Weerdt at No. 2, and junior Diego Flores and freshman Neil Shine at No. 3, were both set down 8-2.
In his No.1 singles match, Janashia was able to take the first set from Eduardo Pereira of UNF 6-4, however Pereira then battled back to win the next two 6-1, 6-1. Prins, at No. 3, was set down by Jose Terrera 6-0, 6-2. At the fifth spot, freshman Daniel Harden was defeated by Elad Gabay 6-1, 6-1, and in the final position, Shine could not hang on against Leonardo Gomes, falling 6-1, 6-0.
Men’s tennis will hold two more matches at home before taking off on a three match road trip. The Eagles will next host Georgia State Friday, February 10th at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Sunday match against Central Florida at 12:00 p.m.

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Junior John Bolton (Portland, Ore.) clinched the match for the Davidson men's tennis team with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Presbyterian College's Andrew Lee and the Wildcats earned the 4-3 win on Friday, Feb. 3. Davidson, playing its third of four straight matches at home, moved to 2-1 in non-conference matches. The Blue Hose, ranked 25th nationally in the latest Division II poll, dropped its season-opener and fell to 0-1.
The Wildcats fell behind early after dropping two of the three doubles matches, both in tie-breakers. The tandem of senior Daniel Bermeo (Quito, Ecuador) and freshman Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned the lone win for Davidson in doubles plays.
Davidson came back in singles play though, and won four straight matches, including Bolton's win at the number five singles slot. Sophomore Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) earned the Wildcats first singles win and his third straight win overall with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Hector Rincon at number one.
After winning his doubles match, Bermeo came back and tallied up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kshitij Dwivedi at number two singles. The senior is now 2-1 on the season at the number two slot. Jaffee was also a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Aaron Chapman of the Blue Hose.
Davidson finishes up its four-match homestand with a match against Queens on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? The Appalachian State University men’s tennis fell to No. 11 South Carolina, 5-2, Saturday at the Sam Daniels Tennis Facility.
Sophomore Zack Williams (Hickory, N.C.) picked up one of Appalachian’s two wins Saturday with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Adam Adler at No. 6 singles. The Mountaineers’ other point came from Ryan Brookshaw (Pretoria, South Africa) who defeated Pedro Rodrigues, 3-6, 0-3, ret., at the No. 2 position via an injury related forfeit.
Alex Probst (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had a solid day for the Mountaineers, as he fell to Tom Eklund, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Probst also teamed up with Brookshaw for the closest doubles match of the day with an 8-4 loss to Rodrigues and Geraldo Knorr at the No. 1 position.
The Mountaineers take two weeks off before opening home play, Sunday, Feb. 19, as they host UNC Asheville at the Racquet Club at Yonahlossee at 2:30 p.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Elon's Kevin Colin forged a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 11 South Carolina's Adam Adler at No. 5 singles, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Phoenix dropped a 6-1 men's tennis match to the Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon at the USC Fieldhouse.
In addition to the other five singles bouts, South Carolina (4-0) also swept the three doubles matches from Elon (0-2). In singles, Geraldo Knorr overcame Damon Gooch 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (8) at No. 1, Yevgeny Supeko decisioned Sebastian Bredberg 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Jaime Cuellar ousted Austin Fenn 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Tom Eklund topped Gustaf Asplund 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Thomas Stoddard bested Kevin Beard 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
In doubles action, Knorr and Supeko survived Gooch and Fenn 9-7 at No. 1, Cuellar and Eklund dispatched Bredberg and Asplund 8-0 at No. 2 and Stoddard and Joe Veeder held off Colin and Kyle Smialek 8-6 at No. 3.
In a doubleheader next Saturday, the Gamecocks play host to Charlotte at 10 a.m. before entertaining Davidson in a 2 p.m. match at the Sam Daniels Tennis Facility. The Phoenix will return to action with a 2 p.m. visit to North Carolina A&T on Feb. 14.
