SoCon Women's Indoor Track & Field Capsules for February 4-5

February 10, 2006 - Bethay leads successful Terrier track & field performance

Senior Katon Bethay's win in the shot put highlighted a strong showing by the Wofford indoor track & field team at the Valentine Open in Boone, N.C., Thursday. The Terriers captured five top-five results overall in the second meet of the season.

Bethay outdistanced the rest of the field in the event with his heave of 53'3" (16.23m). The mark was nearly six feet further than the second-place distance.

In the men's track events, Alex Love earned a third-place time of 7.84 in the 55-meter hurdles. Jason McElveen was the team's top finisher in the 55m and 200 with times of 6.93 and 23.94, respectively, for a 13th-place time in both races.

Michael Lance placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 54.53, while Trey Antley posted an 11th-place time of 5:10.19 in the mile. In the 3,000 Chris Williams tallied a team-best time of 10:42.21 on his way to a 23rd-place result.

On the women's side, the top Wofford field event finish also came in the shot put with a third-place mark of 34'2" (10.41m) by Crystal Belcher.

Lauren Bosshardt, who last week set a school record in the 5,000, registered a second-place time of 11:16.29 in the 3,000. Jaya Abraham also notched a top-five time with her fifth-place finish of 5:50.98 in the mile.

The Terriers' top times in the women's 55 and 400 came from Rachel Hyatt, as she placed 14th and eighth with times of 8.22 and 1:11.64, respectively.

Kara Bennewitz led the Wofford pack in the 200 with an 11th-place time of 31.23 and Ashley Adamson was the top Terrier in the 800 with her time of 2:48.02 to finish 10th.

Wofford will head to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Classic this weekend as it continues its indoor campaign.

February 6, 2006 - Citadel Track Continues To Break Records

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Citadel's women's track and field team continued their record breaking ways this weekend at the UNC Chapel Hill Invitational. Stephanie McNeill added another 10 inches to her school record in the 20 lb. weight throw, marking the fourth week in a row she has upped the record.

McNeill finished fifth in the field of 18 throwers with a toss of 52-10.25 with freshman Monique Edwards placing tenth and breaking the freshman school record she set last week with a throw of 43-8. McNeill also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 42-2 in the field of 26 throwers.

Tosha Sanders broke her own school record in the 60 meter hurdles running 9.45 in the pre-lims and advanced to the finals were she ran 9.54 and placed 12th. Freshman Sarah Strickland broke the mile record she set in December in a meet held at Clemson University running 5:32.26, two seconds faster than her previous time.

Sophomore Jodi Whittle missed the finals in the 60 meters by one hundredth of a second running 7.96, only a tenth of a second off her school record of 7.86. Freshman Megan Jenkins finished 20th in the 800 meters running 2:27.61, just five tenths of a second off the school record she set last week in Chapel Hill.

For the men, senior Marcus Butler finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.97, just six tenths of a second off his personal best time. Butler is currently ranked as the sixth best 800 meter runner in school history.

Freshman Shaquill Smith tied for second place in the high jump with a leap of 6-4. Smith's jump tied her for second in the SoCon rankings in the event.

Junior Zach DiBois placed fourth in the 35 lb. weight with a throw of 45-11.25. Freshman Wesley Merriweather placed 18th in the 60 meters with a personal best time of 7.18 and sophomore Dan Sagmiller placed ninth in the 400 meters also with a personal best time of 50.93. The Bulldog 4 x 400 relay team ran their best time of the year, as Jonathan Vallejo, Marcus Butler, Dan Sagmiller and freshman Jonathan Delago teamed up to run 3:24.46. The Bulldogs are currently ranked third in the 4 x 400 relay in the SoCon rankings.

The men's and women's team will travel to Clemson next week for a two-day meet that will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday and finish up on Saturday. It will be the Bulldogs final tune-up for the SoCon championships which will be hosted by Clemson University, February 24-25.

February 5, 2006 - CofC's Chambless Sets Track & Field School Record At The Carolina Invite

 

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kosha Lance took home the women's weight throw and Summer Chambless set a school record in the pole vault at the Carolina Invite in Chapel Hill, N.C. Saturday on the campus of North Carolina.

 

Lance threw a distance of 17.67 meters (57' 11 3/4") in the weight throw with the second place performer throwing 16.52 meters, a full meter less than Lance.

 

Chambless' pole vault of 3.15 meters (10' 4") set a CofC school record for the sophomore from Heflin, Ala.

 

"This was a solid day for our team as we work toward our goal of the upcoming outdoor season," said head coach Amy Schuckert.  "The indoor season is great preparation for the outdoor season and we plan to take full advantage of this opportunity."

 

The women's distance medley team of Carla Washington, Abby Kostecka, Trina Taylor, and Courtney Williams had a fourth place finish with a time of 13:34.56.

 

CofC will head to Clemson, S.C. to take part in the Tiger Classic Feb. 10th-11th.   

 

February 5, 2006 - Terrier Indoor Track & Field Opened Season

 

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wofford indoor track & field team opened its season with three competitors at the Carolina Invitational Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

 

Sophomore Lauren Bosshardt, the only Terrier female among the trio, broke the school's indoor 5,000-meter record with a time of 19:10.59. She finished sixth out of 14 runners in the event.

 

In the men's field events, Katon Bethay garnered a third-place result out of 17 participants with his mark of 15.81m in the shot put. He placed behind two throwers from N.C. State.

 

Rounding out the Wofford contingent was Alex Love in the 60 hurdles. After running to a time of 8.74 in the qualifying round, he produced a time of 8.56 in the finals to finish 11th out of 14.

 

The Terriers will resume their indoor campaign next weekend, Feb. 10-11, at the Tiger Classic in Clemson, S.C.

 

February 04, 2006 - Elon Women Set Six School Records

CHAPEL HILL
, N.C.- The Elon University women's indoor track squad set six school records at the Carolina Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Dominique Price set records in both the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. Price finished the 60-meter hurdles in 8.77 for a second-place spot among 15 hurdlers. In the 60-meter dash, Price recorded a time of 7.94 for a 16th-place finish.

Alana Black, who set two records last week, finished second among a field of 36 competitors in the one-mile run with a time of 4:59.73. The time eclispes the mark of 5:02.37 that Black set the previous week.

In her first collegiate indoor race, freshman Anne Mae Flynn posted a 3,000-meter time of 10:38.32 breaking fellow rookie Alissa Wilke's record of 10:57.90 established last week. In the process, Flynn finished 12th among 31 runners. Wilke notched a time of 10:57.83 for a 17th-place finish.

For the second week in a row, Katelyn Ealer set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run. Ealer posted a time of 18:26.27 breaking her record of 18:33.11. In doing so, she placed fourth out of 14 runners.

Jessica Clendenning registered a height of 3.60 meters in the pole vault, breaking her own program record of 3.50 meters set in December. After a tie and a jump-off, Clendenning finished second in a field of 19 vaulters.

In other top performances, Cara Maschi finished 19th with a time of 62.41 in the 400-meter dash while Julia Hicks recorded a distance of 5.11 meters in the long jump for a 17th-place spot among 38 jumpers.

The team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Carolina Classic.

February 5, 2006 - Aguocha Leads Lady Paladins At Carolina Invitational

Chapel Hill N.C. -- Furman's Chibuzo Aguocha claimed first place in the women's triple jump with a school record jump of 38'5" to pace the Lady Paladins at the Carolina Indoor Invitational Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Aguocha's jump bested her own school record of 38'4-3/4" set in February of last season. The sophomore, who doubles as a member of the Lady Paladin volleyball team, also placed 12th in the long jump with a distance of 17'3".

Rebecca Mullen and McKenzie Sharpe placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's 800m. Mullen posted a time of 2:16.52 to edge Sharpe's time of 2:16.58.

Furman also got a strong showing from its distance medley relay team which took home first place honors in 12:26.67. Complete results are available below.

February 5, 2006 - Catamount Track & Field Posts Three, First Place Finishes at Akron Open

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina track & field team posted 10 podium performances, including three first-place finishes and 15 seasonal top times over the weekend at the Akron Open in Akron, Ohio. Sophomore Raquel Ramseur, senior Tyler Ferguson, and the women’s 4x400-meter relay team of junior Asia Davis and sophomores Brooke Saddler, Ramseur, and Tangelia Johnson led the Catamounts, all claiming top honors in their respective events.

On the women’s side, Ramseur outran the competition in the 400-meter dash, crossing the stripe in a career-best 55.10 to take first place in the meet and also the quickest time in the Southern Conference this season. Davis placed fourth in the same event, but her time of 56.10 ranks second in the conference only to Ramseur’s time. The two teamed with Saddler and Johnson to win the women’s 4x400-meter relay, giving the Catamount women their second, first-place finish of the meet. Individually, Tangelia Johnson ran third in the 60-meter dash (7.65) and fifth in the 200-meter dash with her best time of the season, 24.95.

Sophomore Kerrie Savery just missed the podium in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2:14.09 to place fourth with her best time of the season. Also recording seasonal-bests were sophomore Nicole Lopez in the shot put (12.63m, 41-5.25) and Rachel Glasgow in the women’s pentathlon, scoring a total of 2,599 points.

The Catamount men combined for 10 seasonal bests and seven podium visits in the meet. Tyler Ferguson gave Western its lone men’s first place finish in the triple jump, leaping a seasonal-best 14.84m (48-8.25) just ahead of freshman teammate Daniel Joseph, who finished third with a mark of 14.37m (47-1.75). On the track, sophomore Zeb Johnson ran second in the 200-meter (21.60) and third in the 60-meter (6.87) dashes, with each time representing his season and career-best during the indoor season. In addition, both of Johnson’s times are the best in the SoCon this season and his 60-meter mark leads four Catamounts rank atop time charts.

Junior Dan Fassinger edged senior teammate Adam Puett in the men’s mile run, placing second and third with times of 4:09.8 and 4:10.6, respectively. The duo also recorded Western’s best times in the 800-meter run, placing fifth and eighth. Both of Fassinger and Puett’s times lead the SoCon. The men’s 4x400-meter relay squad of senior Milton Bolton, freshman Manteo Mitchell, Johnson, and junior James Gregory placed second with a time of 3:14.31, right on the heels of the Eastern Michigan team which posted a time of 3:14.31. Individually, Gregory finished sixth with the fastest time in the conference, with Bolton placing eighth with the second-best time in the 400-meter event.

Senior Lawrence Briscoe finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.22), just missing out on the podium, but his preliminary time of 8.19 was the quickest of the season and ranks second on the SoCon’s speed charts. Also turning in seasonal bests were sophomore Jerod Kelly in both the shot put (15.04m, 49-4.25) and weight throw (16.05m, 52-8.0) and Ashten Bennett in the men’s heptathlon, scoring 4,150 points.

Western returns to action this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at the Tiger Classic hosted by Clemson University. The event marks the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 24-25, also in Clemson, S.C.
