The Southern Conference announced the league’s media basketball All-Conference team today as voted on by members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association. The media members selected individuals for the first and second teams, as well as a Player of the Year, a Coach of the Year and a Freshman of the Year.
Chattanooga had four players named by the media to the two teams. Katasha Brown, who led all SoCon players with 14.7 points per game in conference games, was named the SoCon Player of the Year. She was joined on the first team by teammate Tiffani Roberson.
Brown’s head coach at Chattanooga, Wes Moore, was tabbed by the media as the league’s top head coach on the season after guiding theLady Mocs to their fourth straight outright regular season crown and their second undefeated league season in the past three years. Moore’s team is in the midst of the nation’s longest winning streak at 23 games.
Western Carolina’s Lauren Powell was selected the SoCon’s top freshman after a first-year campaign that saw the Asheville, NC, native finish the regular season eighth in the conference in scoring at 11.9 points per game and first in the category for the Catamounts. Powell’s field goal percentage of .452 was tops on the Catamounts and ninth-best in the SoCon.
Kitara McMoore, who led the SoCon overall in scoring (14.1 points per game) and rebounds (9.1 rebounds per game), became the first Elon player to earn media first-team honors in the Phoenix’s three-year tenure in the SoCon.
Kristen Boone, the 2004-05 Freshman of the Year, was UNC Greensboro’s lone representative on the two squads. Boone earns the honor after a 2005-06 regular season that saw the sophomore enter SoCon tourney action as the league’s assist leader (4.65 per game) and steals leader (4.17).
Georgia Southern senior Nicole Newton, the league leader in offensive rebounds, accumulating 112 over the course of the regular season, is the Lady Eagles’ first member of the media first team since the SoCon media tabbed Shawnica Hill to the first team in the 2002-03 campaign.
