The Southern Conference announced the women’s basketball All-Conference team today. The 10-member squad is selected by the league’s head coaches, with the coaches not being allowed to vote for their own players.
Chattanooga led the way with four players being tabbed by the league’s coaches to the squad. Katasha Brown, who led all SoCon players with a 14.7 points-per-game average in conference games, was named the SoCon Player of the Year. It is the second league Player of the Year nod for the senior from Tazewell, TN, as she also was awarded the league’s top individual accolade after the 2003-04 regular season as a sophomore.
Brown’s head coach at Chattanooga, Wes Moore, was chosen as the league’s top head coach by his peers after guiding the Lady Mocs to their fourth straight outright regular season crown and their second undefeated league season in the past three years.
Joining Brown on the all-conference team were teammates Tiffani Roberson, Nicole Mattison and Alex Anderson. The Chattanooga players named to the Coaches’ team mark the first time since the league expanded to a 10-person squad in the 1999-2000 season that four players from the same team have been chosen by the Coaches for the 10-member team.
Western Carolina’s Lauren Powell was dubbed the SoCon’s top freshman after a first-year campaign that saw the Asheville, NC, native finish the regular season eighth in the conference in scoring at 11.9 points per game and first in the category for the Catamounts.
Davidson was the only other school to have more than one player among the top 10, as Jessica Mitchell and Janell Crayton were both chosen. League scoring (14.1 points per game) and rebounding (9.1 boards per outing) champion Kitara McMoore of Elon, the Wildcats’ opponent in the quarterfinals Friday of the 2006 SoCon Women’s Basketball Tournament, was also named to the team.
Kristen Boone, the 2004-05 Freshman of the Year, was UNC Greensboro’s representative on the squad. Georgia Southern senior Nicole Newton fresh off her Player of the Week accolade in the final week of the regular season was the Lady Eagles’ lone individual on the All-SoCon team.
Appalachian State senior guard Kiki Conyers was the Mountaineers’first player placed on the Coaches All-Conference team since the 2002-03 season when Tiffany Johnson was named to the Coaches’ team.
