SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Appalachian State’s D.J. Thompson and The Citadel’s J’Mel Everhart as the Anaconda’s The Rock Players of the Week for games played between February 21-26.  It’s the second honor this year for Thompson, while it marks Everhart’s first career mention.

Thompson, a 5-8, 170 pound guard from Raleigh, NC, scored 29 point in the Mountaineers’ lone game last week, a win over UNC Greensboro.  He was 9-for-19 from the floor, including connecting on 5-of-10 from 3-point range.  Thompson was also 6-for-6 from the free throw line.  In 38 minutes of action, Thompson, a junior, also added four rebounds, four steals and no turnovers.

Everhart, a 6-5, 185 pound forward from Tyler, TX, helped the Bulldogs to two wins last week over Savannah State and Wofford in overtime.  After scoring a team-high 17 points at Savannah State, Everhart contributed in the team’s first league victory over the Terriers with 18 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Everhart, who hit 7-of-13 shots from the floor, scored 16 points and pulled down 13 of his board after halftime.  For the week, the junior averaged 17.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 59 percent from the floor.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included College of Charleston’s Dontaye Draper (29 points in win over Wofford), Chattanooga’s Charles Anderson (averaged 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in two wins), Elon’s Chris Chalko (21 points in win over UNC Greensboro), Georgia Southern’s Elton Nesbitt (averaged 23.5 ppg in wins over Davidson and Furman), UNC Greensboro’s Ricky Hickman (averaged 28.5 ppg in two losses), Western Carolina’s Antonio Russell (21 points in loss to Chattanooga) and Wofford’s Tyler Berg (tied career high with 23 points against College of Charleston).
