The Southern Conference today named Georgia Southern’s Nicole Newton as the Baden SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played between February 21-26. It is Newton’s second Player of the Week honor of the 2005-06 campaign.

In Georgia Southern’s season-ending 65-61 victory over College of Charleston, Newton acquired her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds. The 17 rebounds by Newton are a SoCon season high and the most by a Lady Eagle player since December of 2003.

The Dublin, GA, native also garnered two assists, two steals and one block in the win that stopped a season-high six-game losing streak for the Lady Eagles. Newton commandeered seven of her 15 points from the charity stripe, knocking down all seven attempts for a team season high.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Chattanooga’s Tiffani Roberson (17 points on 7-for-8 shooting in win over Wofford), Davidson’s Jessica Mitchell (14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 5.5 apg in 1-1 week), Elon’s Kitara McMoore (21 points, 12 rebounds in win over Furman), UNC Greensboro’s Kristen Boone (25 points and a career-best 10 rebounds in win over Western Carolina), Western Carolina’s Teshymia Tillman (15 points and three rebounds in loss to UNCG) and Wofford’s Mary Jo Yee (17 points in loss to UNCG).
