Chattanooga Garners Top Seed In SoCon Women's Basketball Tournament

Chattanooga’s women’s basketball team finished the 2005-06 regular season unscathed in Southern Conference action and the Lady Mocs’ efforts earned them the No. 1 seed in the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. The tournament commences Thursday, March 2 with the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday taking place at McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel before moving to the North Charleston Coliseum for the semifinals and finals.

The Lady Mocs have now earned the No. 1 seed in the SoCon women’s basketball tournament for four consecutive seasons. Chattanooga, which has not fallen in a contest since November, concluded the 2005-06 season in the midst of the nation’s longest winning streak at 23 games. The program will be looking for its fifth tournament championship in the last six seasons, as they fell victim in the quarterfinals to former league member East Tennnesse State last season to end its bid for its fifth straight tournament title.

The Lady Mocs will square off against the winner of the #8 College of Charleston vs. #9 Furman contest on Friday, March 3.

UNC Greensboro won its final four games to earn the second seed in the tournament. Davidson claimed the third seed and Appalachian State, which ended the regular season by winning a season-high five straight games, surged into the fourth seed, setting up a showdown at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 3 with rival and fifth-seeded Western Carolina.

The semifinals and finals of the SoCon women’s basketball tournament will be televised by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS), beginning with semifinal No. 1 at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 4. The final is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Sunday, March 5.

Tickets for the Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Tournament are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets and at the North Charleston Coliseum box office.
