East Carolina 5, College of Charleston 1

 

Maxine Capewell won number one singles but that would be it as the College of Charleston women’s tennis team fell to the East Carolina Pirates, 5-1, in action this morning at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars fall to 1-6 overall, while the Pirates improve to 9-4.

Jenna Marks and Amanda Becker won at number three doubles 8-3, as East Carolina took the other two by scores of 8-4 and 8-5 to win the doubles decision.

In singles play the Pirates took all but one match as Capewell took the 6-3, 6-3 decision over Anca Dumitru at number one. The number four singles was not finished as rain settled in toward the afternoon. That match would not matter as the rest of the matches were taken by the Pirates.

The Cougars’ match against Savannah State, scheduled for 3:30 PM this afternoon, was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up. The Pirates travel to Appalachian State Mar. 4th at 10:00 AM.

Coastal Carolina 7, Western Carolina 0

 

Conway, S.C. - Western Carolina fell to the undefeated Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 7-0, Saturday morning in non-conference action. Western fell to 0-5 on the season while Coastal improved to 8-0, its best start to a season in three years.

The Catamounts again were forced to surrender both the number three doubles and numbers five and six singles matches by default.

In doubles action, sophomores Trish Hanson and Mariona Trilla Jane fell, 8-2, to CCU junior Petra Jantti and sophomore Amy Pazahanick, who won their seventh straight doubles match in the number-one slot. The victory gave Coastal the doubles point in the overall match. At number two, the WCU tandem of Susanna Sjokvist and Holly Stocks fell, 8-1, to junior Sarize Coetzee and senior Rosemary Younger.

Hanson battled tough in her singles match, falling 6-2, 6-2, to senior Virginie Dinh in the first flight, while Sjokvist fell 6-1, 6-2, to Sofie Ahlberg. The Chanticleers' Pazahanick recorded her eighth singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat over Trilla Jane, with Nicole Lemmerer posting a number four singles win over Stocks, 6-1, 6-0.

Western Carolina opens its home venue at the Catamount Athletic Complex, this Tuesday, Feb. 28, hosting mountain-rival UNC Asheville at 2:00 pm.

Wofford 5, UNC Greensboro 2

GREENSBORO, NC -- UNCG's Erica Zabkar earned wins in singles and doubles action, but Wofford's Cayley Wetzig and Laura Lynn Williams pulled out a pair of three-set wins in singles action to clinch the Terriers' 5-2 win in Southern Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

 

Zabkar, UNCG's No. 4 singles' player, teamed up with Emily Wade for an 8-6 doubles pro-set win and then defeated Ashley Page 6-2 and 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker, in singles action. However Wetzig and Williams earned three-set wins at No. 3 and 5 singles, respectively. That was enough to push Wofford to the win.

 

UNCG (2-4) returns to action next weekend when it travels cross-country to take on UC-Riverside in the first of three matches on a California road swing.
