Radford 1-5, UNC Greensboro 0-2
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Radford Wednesday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans fell 1-0 and 5-2 in the first games played at the recently renovated stadium on campus.
Breanna Felix (1-2) went the distance in picking up her first victory of the season for Radford in game one. She allowed only a third inning single to UNCG’s Lyndsay Mouse and struck out four hitters over 7.0 innings.
Radford (4-2) scored the only run of the game on an RBI groundout by Ashley Carlson in the top half of the fifth inning.
Freshman Hannah Angel (0-3) was once again the tough luck loser for the Spartans. She allowed only one run on two hits in 7.0 innings of work. Angel walked a pair and struck out six hitters.
In the second game, Ashley Taylor connected for the first home run at the stadium in third inning. She blasted a two-run shot to right centerfield, giving Radford a 5-0 lead.
Mouse was able to reach on a one-out single in the bottom half of the third and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Mouse later came up to the plate as the tying run in the fourth, but grounded out to third with the bases loaded to end the rally for the Spartans.
UNCG (0-7) added a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Kara Clouser, scoring Gwen Johnson, who doubled to left center to lead off the inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Mouse doubled over the Highlanders’ centerfielder to lead off the frame. Senior Krista Judge followed with an infield single to shortstop that moved Mouse to third. Felix came in to relieve Radford starter Brittaney Brown and promptly retired the next three UNCG hitters to end the game.
Brown got the win for Radford, allowing two runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings of work. Felix struck two batters out to garner her first save of the season.

STATESBORO, GA - The Georgia Southern softball team rallied from 2-0 deficits in each game in a sweep of Georgia State Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles won game one 3-2 with three runs in the sixth and took game two 5-2 with all five runs coming in the fourth inning.
“I think everyone is excited about how we did it as a team,” said Southern head coach Natalie Poole. “Everybody contributed and different people had to step up and it was great to see that happen.”
Game 1 - Georgia Southern 3, Georgia State 2
Georgia State starter Elizabeth Hyman was perfect through 3.2 innings and had a no-hitter going until the sixth, but gave up all three runs with two outs.
The Panthers put two runners across in the fourth using a triple by Jessie Harmon to go up 2-0.
Hyman’s perfect game was broken up by an error in the fourth, but she allowed zero hits until the sixth. Senior Shanita Black (Fayetteville, N.C.) started the two-out rally with a single and junior Heather Smith (Williamson, Ga.) followed with a double to put the Eagles on the board. Senior Gina Sterchi (Chattanooga, Tenn.) made it back-to-back two-baggers to score Smith, knotting the score at 2-2.
The inning was kept alive by an error, which plated the winning run.
“I think we started off not being aggressive and we talked to them as coaches about making adjustments the next time around and told them to get on something early in the count,” added Poole.
Sophomore Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) went the distance, striking out seven to improve to 2-2. Hyman falls to 1-3.
Game 2 - Georgia Southern 5, Georgia State 2
The second game started very similar to the first with the Panthers grabbing a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs.
The first run came in the third inning. Mary Kathryn Branan led off the inning by reaching on an error and then came around to score on another miscue.
In the fourth, Harmon led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on two passed balls.
The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth thanks to two singles and a walk. Georgia State starter Chelsey Morgan was on her way to pitching out of the rally, striking out the next batter and inducing a foul out, but sophomore Aubrey Thweatt’s (Georgia, Vt.) first hit of the season was a big one, a bases-clearing double to give Georgia Southern a 3-2 lead.
All eight Eagle runs on the afternoon were scored with two outs.
“As long as we’re making adjustments at the plate, we can make things happen with no outs and with two outs,” said Poole.
Junior Logan Free (Sandpoint, Idaho) earned the win in relief, tossing four innings of no-hit ball, to up her mark to 3-3. Morgan was tagged with the loss, dropping to 1-2.
