ELON, N.C. ­ Elon captured five of six singles matches and all three doubles bouts on its way to a 6-1 non-conference men?s tennis triumph over Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (1-6) scratched out a win at No. 6 singles when Kevin Phillip overcame Kevin Beard 3-6, 7-6 (8), 10-2. It proved to be too little, too late, as the Phoenix (3-2) emerged victorious for the third time in as many contests.

In doubles play, Damon Gooch and Austin Fenn dispatched Taylor Ferrier and Kern Phillip 8-3 at No. 1; Kevin Colin and Sebastian Bredberg beat Roberto Vasques and Gabriel Veiga 8-4 at No. 2 and Gustaf Asplund and Anuwat Dalodom staved off Kim Ellis and Brad Clinard 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles action, Gooch (6-1, 6-0 over Ferrier at No. 1), Bredberg (7-5,

6-3 over Vasques at No. 2), Asplund (6-3, 6-3 over Veiga at No. 3), Colin (6-3, 7-5 over Clinard at No. 4) and Fenn (6-2, 6-2 over Ellis at No. 5) all notched victories.

Gardner-Webb will return to action with a non-league match at Charlotte at 10 a.m. Saturday. Elon will enter Southern Conference play when it visits Chattanooga at noon Saturday.
