Southern Conference Women's Tennis Results from Feb. 21

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Davidson women’s tennis team defeated visiting Queens College, 7-0, sweeping both the doubles and singles matches on Tuesday night at Knobloch Tennis Center. Queens drops to 0-4 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 5-3.

The ’Cats began the evening by winning the doubles point handily as sophomores Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan combined to defeat Skye Powell and Lee-Deane Elmore. Freshman Michelle Fanney teamed with senior Lindsey Powel for an 8-2 win, while senior Betsey Haywood and sophomore Meredith Skeeters did likewise in an 8-1 decision.

Linville, Whelan and Skeeters won their singles matches in two sets each, as did junior Kate Levitt and freshman Emily Wilkinson. The only three-set match belonged to Fanney, who pulled out the victory over Merissa Rock, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.

Next, Davidson will face Armstrong Atlantic on the road on March 2.

Elon 6, Gardner-Webb 1

 

ELON, N.C. ? Elon claimed five of the six singles bouts and all three doubles contests en route to a 6-1 non-league women's tennis victory over Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (1-7) clawed their way to a triumph at No. 4 singles when Monica Walser rallied past Melissa Holland 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, but the Phoenix (3-3) swept the other matches in rebounding from Saturday's loss at No. 11 North Carolina.

In doubles action, Evin Prelec and Kelly Fleck defeated Walser and Krystina Sigmon 8-1 at No. 1; Holland and Whitney Butcher staved off Amy Beavers and Sara Zirnheld 8-6 at No. 2 and Elizabeth Kernodle and Alli Benton upended Jenny Gomez and Tracey Tonsor 8-3 at No. 3.

In singles play, Prelec (6-1, 6-0 over Gomez at No. 1), Fleck (6-4, 6-1 over Beavers at No. 2), Kernodle (6-1, 7-5 over Zirnheld at No. 3), Butcher (6-3, 6-1 over Sigmon at No. 5) and Benton (7-5, 6-3 over Tonsor at No. 6) all posted wins.

Elon will host non-conference foe UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Gardner-Webb will return to action with a non-league match at Charlotte at 10 a.m. Saturday.
