Winthrop 6, College of Charleston 1
After three straight losses, the Winthrop women’s tennis team picked up its first dual match win of the season as it downed College of Charleston 6-1 this Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
After winning the number two match and losing the number three match, the Lady Eagles (2-3) grabbed the doubles point with a win at the first seed.
The Lady Eagles also dominated in the singles pairings winning five of the six matches. Junior Ana Paula Novaes at number one and freshman Malin Sjoqvist at number six were Winthrop’s highlights as both players blanked their opponents. Cougar Chelsea Albertz provided the lone win at singles, taking down Patricia Coimbra 7-5, 6-4.
The team hits the road for a match at 18th ranked University of Georgia this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Cougars (1-5) travel to Charlotte to take on the 49ers the 18th at 10:30 a.m.

Tallahassee, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis team faced a tough challenge Saturday (Feb. 18) at the home of No. 56 ranked Florida State University. The Seminoles took the morning match by a score of 7-0.
In doubles play, the Eagles (1-6) fell 8-3, 8-1 and 8-3, and in singles play, the ?Noles defeated the Eagles in straight sets in each match.
Georgia Southern will look to rebound on Saturday, March, 3 when they host Gardner-Webb at 11:00 a.m. on Hanner Courts.

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Davidson dropped just one match and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Liberty Flames in women’s tennis action Saturday at the Knobloch Tennis Center. The win improved the Wildcats to 4-3 overall, while Liberty remains winless at 0-2 on the season.
The Wildcats opened the dual winning each of the three doubles’ matches to grab an early 1-0 team advantage. Two of the three victories came by way of 8-2 scores, while Michelle Fanney and Lindsey Powel just needed one more point to defeat Jonita Randolph and Matyna Hanusz of Liberty, 8-3.
In singles play, Davidson won five of the six matches in straight sets with its only loss lasting three sets at the second seed. The Flames’ Dina Sekina secured the only point for Liberty defeating Wildcat freshman Michelle Fanney 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Davidson will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 21 when it host Queens College at 5:30 p.m. The Flames will entertain in-state foe Mary Washington at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Greenville, SC - The 60th ranked Furman women's tennis team was narrowly defeated 4-3 by 27th ranked Clemson on Saturday at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The loss drops Furman to 2-5 on the year with Clemson improving to 3-1.
Clemson grabbed the early 1-0 advantage with wins in all three doubles matches. In singles play Furman picked up three victories but fell just short as Clemson also secured three singles victories. In flight three Furman's Lauren Osborne defeated Maria Brito 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 while fellow Lady Paladin Bonnie Baird downed Kathi Gerber 7-6(2), 6-2 in flight five. At No.6 Clemson's Marie Scriba retired after dropping the first set to Lauren Tomory 6-2 for Furman's third victory.
Furman returns to action Tuesday, February 28 with a 4:30 PM match against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped its third-straight to open the 2006 spring season, falling on the road at Gardner-Webb Thursday afternoon, 6-1, at the GWU Tennis Complex in Boiling Springs. Sophomore Trish Hanson earned the Catamounts' first singles match win of the spring on the day, defeating the Bulldogs' Jenny Gomez in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, Western (0-3) fell behind an early point as the team of Hanson and classmate, Susanna Sjokvist, fell 8-4 to the freshman duo of Gomez and Amy Beavers. The No. 2 doubles pair of freshmen Mariona Trilla Jane and Holly Stocks also fell by the same count to GWU's Monica Walser and Krystina Sigmon, with the third seed of doubles won by Gardner-Webb by default.
Hanson earned WCU's lone point of the match in singles competition, playing well for the 6-4, 7-5 victory over Gomez in the first flight. Overall, however, the Lady Bulldogs would take five of the six matches over the shorthanded Catamounts, with the fifth and sixth seed singles matches going to Gardner-Webb by default. Western's Trilla Jane fell to Beavers, which was her first collegiate win, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Also, GWU's Walker defeated Sjokvist, 6-4, 6-0, while Sara Zirnheld would pick up a win at the #3 position over Stocks, 6-4, 6-3, clinching the match for the Lady Bulldogs on the afternoon.
Western returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 18 as it visits Mercer for a 1:00 pm match in Macon, Ga. The Catamounts will play three additional matches away from Cullowhee before returning home to open the new Catamount Athletic Complex tennis facilities on Wednesday, March 1 versus mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, at 2:00 pm.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Appalachian State University women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 7-0 sweep of UNC Asheville, Saturday, at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Junior Anja Gugger picked up wins at both the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions. In singles play, she defeated Rachel Rhoney, 6-3, 6-2. Gugger then teamed up with senior Lyndsey Free to defeat Rhoney and Mary K. Fitzgerald, 8-4.
Freshman Monica Tomas, seniors Victoria Moody and Salem Kirven and sophomore Frances Blanton each picked up two wins on the day as well. Tomas defeated Fitzgerald, 6-0, 5-7 (6). She teamed up with Blanton for a win by default at No. 3 doubles. Blanton picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lindsay Wooten at No. 5 singles.
Moody defeated Lindsay Boykin, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, then paired with Kirven for an 8-1 defeat of Boykin and Rachel Poole at No. 2 doubles. Kirven defeated Poole, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Appalachian returns to action Feb. 25 and 26 as it heads to UNC-Wilmington Saturday and Coastal Carolina Sunday. Both matches begin at 12 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The 11th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team bested Elon University 7-0 Saturday night at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, improving the Tar Heels' season record to 9-2.
North Carolina swept all three doubles matches and all six singles flights from Elon (2-3). In doubles action, the No. 11 duo of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long dispatched Evin Prelec and Kelly Fleck 8-1 at No. 1 while the No. 50 pairing of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith defeated Melissa Holland and Whitney Butcher 8-0 at No. 2 and the team of Alexandra Jurewitz and Laura Reichert downed Elizabeth Kernodle and Alli Benton 8-0 at No. 3.
In singles play, No. 26 Long foiled Prelec 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, No. 48 Caitlin Collins knocked off Fleck 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Fanjoy ousted Kernodle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, Reichert beat Holland 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Jurewitz decisioned Butcher 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Hanes Harris upended Benton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
