North Carolina State 22, UNC Greensboro 17
RALEIGH, NC ? The UNC Greensboro wrestling team dropped only its second bout of the season when the Spartans fell 22-17 at North Carolina State Wednesday evening at Reynolds Gym.
The Wolfpack jumped out to an early 6-0 lead when Jeremy Hartrum pinned Spartan freshman Justin Walp in 4:20 in the 125 lbs. weight class. UNCG (9-2, 3-0) sophomore Chris Bencivenga cut the Wolfpack lead in half as the Davie, FL product earned a 9-6 decision over Garrett Cummings at 133 lbs.
Senior Kevin Artis gave UNCG a brief 12-9 lead when he pinned Jalil Dozier in 3:19 in the 141 lbs. weight class. At 149 lbs., NC State quickly responded and tied the match at 12 when Joe Caramanica downed Cody Harrington 8-5.
After the Wolfpack tallied another three points in the 157 lbs. weight class, Mark Ring put the Spartans right back in contention as the Glassboro, NJ native bested Obie Simpson 8-6 in the 165 lbs. weight class.
NC State opened up a six point lead after decision victories at 174 and 184 lbs., but junior and 18th-ranked (USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Coaches Poll) Daren Burns left UNCG within two points at 19-17 with one match remaining following his 20-4 technical fall victory over Mark Jahad at 197 lbs.
UNCG’s bid for a come-from-behind victory fell just short as Wolfpack heavyweight Jainor Palma claimed a slim 3-2 decision over 13th-ranked (USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Coaches Poll) Tyler Shovlin in the match’s final bout.
UNCG returns to the mat Sunday when the Spartans travel to Norfolk, VA to take on Old Dominion in a 12 noon matchup.
