Greenville, SC - The Furman men's tennis team picked up two wins Friday after shutting out Sewanee 7-0 in the morning and downing Erskine 6-1 in the afternoon. With the two wins the Paladins improved their record to 3-6 on the year.
In the morning match against Sewanee, Furman took control early and never looked back. Scott Kahler teamed with Will Kieffer for a doubles win at No.1 while Ryan Friend and Andy Sobczyk gave Furman the 1-0 lead with a win in flight two. In the third match Ethan Asher and Jason Basile picked up a win to give Furman the doubles sweep. Furman went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets.
In the afternoon Furman picked up right where they left off capturing the doubles point over Erskine by winning all three doubles matches. In singles play Furman won the first five matches giving them a 6-0 advantage. In flight two Chris Gilli blanked Povice Padron 6-0, 6-0 while in flight three B.J. James downed John Jayokumar 6-4, 6-2. Playing at No.4 Michal Kociecki eased by Simeon Harrar and at No.5 Joe Cariello defeated Sammy Zingales both by a score of 6-1, 6-0. In flight six Jason Basile hit his way to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jacob Gregory. In the final singles match at No.1 Erskine's Billy Lambon picked up the Flying Fleet's only win with a 7-6, 4-6, 10-4 victory over Alex Doan.
The Paladins return to action tomorrow with matches against Washington & Lee and Emory. Matches are tentatively set for 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

College of Charleston 4, Winthrop 3
Two-time Big South defending champions Winthrop men’s tennis (0-3) team fell against College of Charleston 3-4 at home this Friday afternoon.
The Cougars (2-1) started the match by taking the doubles point home with wins at the first and third matches. The duo of Alejandro Portugal and Jorge Padilla picked up Winthrop's only win.
Pushed by sophomore Vinicius Bortolatto, the Eagles posted three wins in singles play. Bortolatto at number one, sophomores Rodrigo Santos at number two and Portugal at number four left the court victorious, but College of Charleston’s three wins gave the scoreboard final numbers.
Winthrop’s next match will be at home against NAIA school Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Cougars host Davidson the 25th in their SoCon opener at 2:00 p.m.

Wofford 4, High Point 3
Sophomore Richard Cahi rallied to win his match at the No. 5 singles position, which proved to be the clincher, as the Wofford men's tennis team topped High Point, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
After dropping the first set, Cahi won the final two sets for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 triumph versus Benjamin Deloume. In the final set, Cahi broke Deloume's serve at 4-4 and held on for the victory.
Other singles wins for the Terriers came at the No. 1 slot, where 2005 All-Southern Conference selection Andrew Stubbs handed Mike Tolman a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 defeat, and at the No. 3 seed, as junior Alex Fridzon registered a 7-5, 6-1 triumph versus Jack Notton.
Wofford also claimed two of the three doubles contests to earn the point. Stubbs and senior Chris Barlow posted an 8-3 win against Chris Archer and David Perren at the No. 1 slot.
The clinching match came at the No. 3 position, where Fridzon and classmate Michael Barber earned a 9-7 victory over Deloume and Notton. The Terrier duo trailed 7-4, 15-40, before coming-from-behind for the doubles point-clinching win.
With the win, Wofford won its third straight to even its record at 3-3. The Panthers drop to 3-3 with the loss.
The Terriers will next play at 1 p.m. Friday as they open Southern Conference action versus The Citadel at the Reeves Center.
