Appalachian State And Davidson Tally League Wins

ELON, NC - Janell Crayton knocked down a game-high 18 points, pacing Davidson to a 60-47 Southern Conference women's basketball triumph over Elon Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

Kitara McMoore finished off a fast-break lay-up to put the Phoenix (11-13 overall, 6-9 SoCon) up 2-0 with 18:35 to go in the first period. After three ties and three lead changes, the Wildcats (14-10, 10-5) went on an 18-4 run to transform a 9-7 deficit into a 25-13 advantage on a jumper by Kelly Gassie with 4:16 to play before the intermission.

After settling for a 27-17 halftime edge, Davidson immediately stretched its lead to 30-17 on a three-point bomb by Crayton just 13 seconds into the second stanza. Crayton went on to finish the night with 6-for-8 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the three-point arc.

Trailing 41-31 with 14:20 remaining, a three-pointer by Myra Donkin and a fast-break lay-up by Tierra Bumbrey pulled the Phoenix within 41-36 with 13:33 left. The Wildcats responded by fashioning a 12-2 run, forging a 53-38 lead on a basket by Jessica Mitchell with 5:28 to play. Elon never inched any closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Mitchell (12 points, game-high five assists) and Gassie (11 points, team-high six rebounds, game-high four steals) each scored in double figures for Davidson. McMoore (12 points), Nikko King (10 points, game-high nine rebounds) and Donkin (10 points) all turned in double-digit scoring performances for Elon.

The Wildcats fired 56.1 percent (23-for-41) from the field for the contest, including 50.0 percent (5-for-10) from three-point land. The Phoenix shot 41.7 percent (20-for-48) from the floor and 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from the three-point line. Elon out-rebounded Davidson 28-24, but committed 22 turnovers to 16 for the Wildcats.

Appalachian State 75, Wofford 56

 

BOONE, NC - Freshman Greteya Kelley made her first nine shots from the field en route to a career-high 22 points to lead Appalachian State University women’s basketball to a 75-56 rout over Wofford on Tuesday night at the Holmes Center.

Down 8-7 with just over 14 minutes to go in the first half, the Mountaineers used a 19-0 run to give them a 26-8 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half, a lead they would hold throughout.

Kelley (Suwanee, Ga.) finished the night 9-of-10 from the field and added four rebounds in the win. Two other Mountaineers scored in double-figures as senior Kiki Conyers (Tallahassee, Fla.) and sophomore Whitney Tossie (Oviedo, Fla.) added 14 and 12 points, respectively. Tossie chipped in six assists and four steals.

Jaime Bennett (Woodstock, Ga.) paced Appalachian with a game-high 11 rebounds, six on the offensive end. She also compiled seven points, four steals and a blocked shot on the night.

Two Terriers scored in double-digits as Nakia Mister led the team in both points and rebounds with 15 and seven, respectively. She added a team-high four steals. Liz Miller recorded a career-high 14 points.

With the win, Appalachian improves to 12-12 on the season and moves into sole possession of fourth-place with an 8-7 Southern Conference mark. Wofford drops to 7-17 overall and a league-worst, 3-12 mark in conference.

The two teams entered the game with Wofford as the national steals leader and Appalachian ranked third in the nation. The Terriers were just below their average of 14.1 steals per game with 13, while the Mountaineers upped their average of 13.4 with 21.

ASU had a hot shooting night from beyond the three-point arc, making a season-high 10 three-pointers while shooting at a season-high 58.8 percent mark from beyond the arc.

Appalachian held a 45-16 lead at halftime. Wofford put on a mini-run, outscoring ASU, 12-5 in the first five and a half minutes of the second period. The Mountaineers led by as many as 30 after that point, before going onto a 19-point, 75-56 win.

After Appalachian’s 19-0 run in the first half to give the home team a 24-8 lead, ASU reached its largest lead of the half of 29 points at 45-16 with a minute and a half to go in the first period. Neither team scored in the final minute as the score remained 45-16 going into halftime.
