The Southern Conference today named UNC Greensboro’s Kemena Brooks as the Baden SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played between February 7-13. Brooks is the first UNC Greensboro women’s basketball player to nab the accolade in the 2005-06 season.
Brooks, a sophomore from Accokeek, MD, came off the bench last week for the Spartans to average 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in almost 24 minutes of action per outing. Brooks shot 57 percent from the field in UNCG’s 1-1 week, including going 4-for-7 from beyond three-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.
In the Spartans’ 85-84 loss to Tarheel state rival Appalachian State last Saturday, Brooks acquired a career-best 25 points (8-for-13 shooting from the floor). Brooks scored 21 of the 25 points in the second half, including nine points in the final two minutes of the contest. The sophomore ended her exploits on the week by bringing down a career-high six rebounds in the win at College of Charleston on Monday to go along with her 10 points.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Kiki Conyers (17 points in win over UNC Greensboro), Chattanooga’s Laura Hall (20 points, including career-high six 3-pointers in win over Western Carolina), Davidson’s Tia Washington (13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in Davidson’s road victory at Georgia Southern) and Wofford’s Mary Jo Yee (14 points in loss to Furman, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc).
