CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s tennis teams combined Sunday to shut out the teams from Austin Peay State, with both teams claiming 7-0 victories.

The matches were played indoors at the Hixson Racquet Club.

The men’s team improved to 4-2 on the year, winning the doubles point and claiming straight set singles victories.

Winning singles matches for the Mocs were Mark Fynn at No. 1, Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 2, Badr Bouabdellah at No. 3, Razvan Axente at No. 4, Josh Bales at No. 5 and Michael Hangstefer at No. 6.

The women’s team won its first dual match of the season. No. 1 singles player Anastasia Zhukova continued her run of victories with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Isabel Rzezniczek. Zhukova is ranked No. 36 in the latest ITA rankings among players in the Southeast Region.

Zukova and doubles partner Lindsey Ballard are ranked No. 11 and scored an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles for the Lady Mocs.

Also recording singles victories for UTC were Lindsey Ballard at No. 2, Talita Bragato at No. 3, Bonnie Adams at No. 4, Beata Knizat at No. 5 and Ashley Johnson at No. 6.

The men’s team hosts Belmont Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club, and the women open Southern Conference action Feb. 25, hosting Elon at noon at the Champion’s Club.

Georgia 7, Furman 0

 

Athens, GA - The 68th ranked Furman men's tennis team was shut out Sunday by 2nd ranked Georgia 7-0. The loss drops Furman to 1-6 on the year with the Bulldogs improving to 4-0.

Georgia took an early 1-0 lead after capturing two of the three doubles points. In flight one Luis Flores and John Isner downed Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn 8-3 while in flight two Georgia's 6th ranked team of Strahinia Bobusic and Colin Purcell defeated Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman. Furman picked up a win in flight three with Scott Kahler and Will Kieffer outlasting Ricardo Gonzalez and Joshua Varela 8-7(7-4) but the Bulldogs had already secured the doubles point. Georgia carried the early momentum into singles play as they captured all six singles matches in straight sets to make the final score 7-0.

The Paladins return home on Friday for a double header against Sewanee and Erskine. Match times are set for 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM respectively.

Davidson 7, Belmont Abbey 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? After getting blanked by #12 South Carolina the day before, the Davidson men's tennis team regrouped with a 7-0 shutout against Belmont Abbey at Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats won for the fourth time in the past six matches to move to 4-2 overall and Belmont Abbey dropped to 0-3 overall on the season.

The Wildcats earned the doubles point with a win at the number one and number two spots. The Crusaders were forced to default the number three doubles spot due to not having enough players. Teaming up for the second time this year in doubles, senior Joe Cheaney (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) earned an 8-1 victory over Enrique Gonzalez and Adam Gault at number two doubles.

Davidson moved its lead to 2-0 after Belmont Abbey defaulted the number six singles spot. Then the Wildcats swept the singles action, giving up only a total of seven games in the five matches combined.

Senior Daniel Bermeo (Quito, Ecuador) played his first match of the season at number one singles and did not disappoint, serving up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aaron Miller. Junior Jay Chitty (Shelby, N.C.) earned his first win of the 2006 season, defeating Gonzalez at the number five singles spot by the count of 6-0, 6-1.

After winning his doubles match, Compeau made it a two-win day and got back on the winning track in singles play with victory at number three singles over Jimmie Whitman by the score of 6-1, 6-2.

Also scoring wins in impressive fashion were junior John Bolton (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Ethan Jaffee (Indianpolis, Ind.), who both won by the score of 6-0, 6-0 at number four and two singles.

Davidson plays its last home match of the month when it hosts Lees-McRae on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1:30.

College of Charleston 6, East Carolina 0

 

The College of Charleston won all but one singles match in straight sets to take the 6-0 win over East Carolina in men’s tennis action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars improve to 1-1 overall, while the Pirates drop to 4-2 on the year.

Charleston opened play, winning the doubles point, by taking the number two and three doubles by a score of 8-4 apiece. Number one doubles was not finished.

The closest match of the day was the 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 win by Omer Abramovich over ECU’s Nick Rose at number four singles. Number three singles was not finished with Justin Malina winning 7-5, 3-0 when play was suspended.

The Pirates host Campbell the 18th at 10:30 AM and North Carolina A&T at 4:00 PM in Greenville, N.C., while the Cougars travel to Winthrop the 17th for a 2:00 PM match.
