Southern Conference Men's Tennis Results from Feb. 10

 

Georgia State 6, Georgia Southern 1

STATESBORO, Ga. - Instead of completing the weekend with two matches under their belt, the Georgia Southern Men’s tennis team was only able to host Georgia State on Friday (Feb. 10). The Panthers won the match 6-1 and the Eagles (0-3) were unable to try for the weekend split as the match against Central Florida, scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 12), was cancelled due to the wind gusts of 31 mph that hit Statesboro and the surrounding area.

In the match against Georgia State, only senior Lasha Janashia (Tbilsi, Rep. Of Georgia/American Heritage) was able to come away with a singles victory. Janashia won the contest from the No. 2 position in three sets against Ga. State’s Nejc Podkrajsek 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Georgia State swept all three doubles tilts by scores of 8-6, 9-7, and 8-1.

In the rest of the singles matches, senior Vincent Patry (Paris, France/LyceeJacques Monod) fell in the No. 1 spot to Martin Stiegwardt 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Philip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch) was upended by Clarence Boyd 6-2, 3-6(14-12) at No. 3. Freshmen Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) and Daniel Harden (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) lost by nearly identical scores from the Nos. 4 and 5 spots, respectively; De Weerdt to Matic Sulin 6-3, 6-3 and Harden to Jacek Twarowski 6-3, 6-2. At No. 6, freshman Neil Shine (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Prep) fell to Daniel Balog 7-6(2), 6-2.

In an exhibition match, freshman Jakub Hanusz (Stola Wola, Poland/Zespol School) defeated Eduardo Gutierrez 7-5, 6-2.

The Georgia State / Central Florida match that was supposed to take place on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Hanner Courts had to be cancelled as well due to the weather. No make up dates for either match will be scheduled.

The Men’s Tennis team will have more than a week off before their next match when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop University on Thursday, February 23rd.

Vanderbilt 7, Chattanooga 0

NASHVILLE --- The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team swept all six singles matches and each of the three doubles matches Friday to defeat UTC 7-0.

The match was played indoors at the Currey Tennis Center on the Vanderbilt campus.

Vanderbilt captured the doubles point for the 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches were 8-6 decisions.

UTC sophomore Artyom Vlasenko took his opponent, Evan Dufaux, to three sets at No. 3 singles before falling 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 in a super breaker. Andy Mack’s 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 2 singles proved to be the clincher for Vanderbilt, providing the Commodores with their fourth team point.

Other singles decisions included Ryan Preston over Mark Fynn at No. 1, Nathan Sachs over Badr Bouabdellah at No. 4, Jordan Magarik over Razvan Axente at No. 5 and Nik Cromydas over Michael Hangstefer at No. 6.

The Mocs fall to 3-2 overall and host Austin Peay State Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club.
