DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Chattanooga claimed nine of the 10 bouts to cruise by Davidson 40-3 in Southern Conference wrestling action Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena. The win improves the Mocs to 15-7-1 overall and 3-0 in the league. Davidson falls to 6-7-1 on the 2005-06 campaign and 1-2-1 in the SoCon.
After dropping the opening three bouts to fall behind 11-0, Marcus Boyd put the Wildcats on the board with a 5-3 decision over T.J. Sayers at 174-pounds. The win was the 9th straight for the Durham, N.C., native as he improves to 12-1 on the year.
Seven of Chattanooga’s nine victories came either by major decision or by fall.
The Wildcats will conclude Southern Conference regular season competition Tuesday, Feb. 14 in a 7 p.m. bout at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Chattanooga returns to the mats Saturday, Feb. 8 when it host UNC Greensboro.

Maryland 28, UNC Greensboro 18
GREENSBORO, NC ? Maryland claimed the first three bouts of the afternoon and never trailed as the Terrapins defeated UNC Greensboro 28-18 in wrestling action Saturday at Fleming Gym.
Maryland (7-8, 4-0 ACC) freshman James Knox put the visiting Terrapins out in front 3-0 when he defeated Spartan freshman Justin Walp 9-3 in the 125 lbs. weight class. In the 133 lbs. weight class, Brendan Byrne extended the Terp’s lead to 9-0 as he recorded a fall victory over UNCG’s (9-4, 3-0 SoCon) Chris Bencivenga in 1:58 in the 133 lbs. weight class.
In the 141 lbs. weight class, Alex Krom recorded Maryland’s third consecutive victory as the freshman claimed a 12-4 major decision victory over UNCG’s Tripp Rogers. Spartan senior Cody Harrington put UNCG right back in the match at 13-6 when he earned a much needed fall victory over Andrew Schlaffer in 1:45 in the 149 lbs. weight class.
Maryland quickly regained the momentum back as Adam James countered UNCG’s fall victory at 149 lbs. with one of his own at 157 lbs. James pinned UNCG freshman Marcus Hannah at 6:36 to give Maryland a 19-6 advantage at the midway point. Adam DeCosmo increased Maryland’s lead to 22-6 when he bested UNCG’s Mark Ring 9-3 in the 165 lbs. weight class.
UNCG junior Joe Lowe put the Spartans back in striking distance when he pinned Maryland’s Mike Maceroli in 2:26 in the 174 lbs. weight class. With the win, Lowe improved his overall record to 18-3. Luke Stauffer clinched the match for Maryland in the 184 lbs. weight class when he downed Scott Fisher 4-2 to put the Terrapins out in front 25-12.
In the 197 lbs. weight class, Jerry Afari collected Maryland’s seventh win of the afternoon as he defeated 20th-ranked Daren Burns 14-9 to end the day’s competition. Tyler Shovlin, ranked 13th this week in the 285 lbs. weight class, collected his 20th win of the season as he earned a forfeit victory in the heavyweight class.
UNCG returns to the mat Wednesday as the Spartans return to Southern Conference action as UNCG welcomes VMI to Fleming Gym for a 7 pm matchup.
