February 11, 2006 - Eagles Compile Five Top-5 Finishes In Carolina Classic
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Track & Field team tallied five top-5 finishes, including one overall win, at the Carolina Classic on Saturday (Feb. 13). The meet was hosted by the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
Junior Lauren Jacobs (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) earned the first place finish in the Long Jump with a leap of 19’02.00” to win the event by nearly five inches. The distance is also a new personal best. Jacobs also finished seventh overall in 60M Hurdles with a new personal best time of 8.85.
Coming in just ahead of Jacobs in the 60M Hurdles was teammate Brittany Chase (Lawrencevill, Ga./Berkmar) with a time of 8.76 for fifth place.
Tallying two top-10 places for the Eagles was sophomore Amber Wilson (Resaca, Ga./Gordon Central) with a fourth place finish in High Jump (5’04.25), and a personal best, seventh place finish in the 400M Dash (58.23).
The Georgia Southern throwers also enjoyed a successful day as sophomore Monique Pitts (Lilbur, Ga./Brookwood) recorded a new personal best in her third place Weight Throw of 51’11”. Junior Emily Greeson (Calhoun, Ga./Gordon Central) added a fifth place finish in Shot Put with a throw of 41’05.25”.
The Indoor season will conclude for the Eagles in two weeks as they travel to Clemson, S.C. for the Southern Conference Championships, held Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th. The Outdoor season will get underway a few weeks later as Georgia Southern hosts the Georgia Southern Invitational in Statesboro on Saturday, March 18th.
February 14, 2006 - Western Carolina Track & Field Post Six Podium Performances, Three First-place Finishes
Cullowhee, N.C. - Led by a trio of first-place finishes, Western Carolina recorded six podium finishes at the Tiger Invitational over the weekend in Clemson, S.C., in the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Catamount men had two, first-place runs as defending SoCon Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Zeb Johnson, and senior Adam Puett took top honors in the men's 400-meter dash and 3,000-meter run. Johnson ran a 49.32 to win the event, while Puett just edged junior teammate, Dan Fassinger, with a time of 8:31.09 versus Fassinger's 8:31.14, both of which were seasonal bests. Milton Bolton rounded out the men's podium finshes, running second in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 22.06. Manteo Mitchell placed seventh in the same event.
Also recording top 10 finishes for Western's men were Field Miller (9th in the 5,000-meter run) and Rashad Herndon (6th in long jump), while Daniel Joseph, Tyler Ferguson, and Rod Palmer placed fourth, sixth, and ninth, respectively, in the men's triple jump. Senior Lawrence Briscoe recorded two, fifth-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23) and high jump, clearing 1.92m (6-3.50). Chris Page placed eighth in the shot put, with teammate Jerod Kelly placing fifth in the same event and sixth in the weight throw. In relay action, Duke Craig, Charleton Grant, Jamar Frazier, and Dylan Hermelee teamed to run fourth in the men's 4x400-meter relay.
On the women's side, sophomore Raquel Ramseur tripped the tape first in the 200-meter dash, procurring the season's best time in the event at 24.75. Also recording a podium finish for Western was junior Brittany Whitaker, who finished third in the women's high jump, just missing her seasons best by clearing 1.63m (5-4.25).
Additional Western Carolina top 10 finishes included sophomore Kerrie Savery running seventh in the mile run, turning in her best performance of the indoor season with a 5:15.67. Nicole Lopez placed seventh in the women's shot put (12.75m, 41-10), and the team of Brooke Saddler, Aneesha Lane, Brittany Whitaker, and Anne Bailey ran ninth in the 4x400-meter relay.
Western will take a week off before returning to action Feb. 24-25 at the SoCon Championships, also being held at Clemson's indoor facility.

- Burnett, Gaffney Lead Appalachian Women at Clemson Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. ? Senior Beverly Burnett won the shot put and sophomore Meghan Gaffney placed second in the mile to help lead the Appalachian State University women’s indoor track and field team at the Clemson Invitational Feb. 10-11.
Burnett recorded a throw of 51-02.75 in the shot put for the highest ASU finish of the weekend to break her own school record. Gaffney moved into fifth in the ASU record books with a time of 5:03.23 in the mile.
The Mountaineer women added four more top-10 finishes in the prestigious meet. Senior Nikole Simmons placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 57-0.25.
Fellow senior Jennifer Kelley placed sixth in the 3,000m with a time of 10:29.68, while classmates Caren Mah and Bridget Robertson finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh with marks of 10-11.75 and 10-6.0, respectively. Robertson’s mark is a personal record, and moves her into a tie for fourth in the ASU record books.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend as they host the Appalachian Open Feb. 17 and head to the Virginia Tech Invitational Feb. 18.

Kosha Lance set a new Southern Conference Track & Field record in the weight throw as she recorded a distance of 61 feet, two and one-quarter inches Saturday at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson.
Lance’s mark of 61-02.25 surpasses her own personal best as well as the current SoCon record of 60 feet, one and one-quarter inches, a difference of one foot, one inch.
Both Dominique Boone and Summer Chambless tied CofC school records as Boone earned a mark of five feet and one-quarter inches in the high jump and Chambless earned a height of 10 feet six inches in the pole vault.
“The girls have worked really hard the past couple of weeks and today shows it,” said Assistant Coach Adrian Wheatley. “We have done a lot to put us in a good position in the upcoming weeks.”
Wells Trompeter had a top 15 finish as she took home 11th in the mile run with a time of 5:18.37. Katie Hedley and Ashley Arnold also had good days as the pair finished fifth and seventh respectively in the 5000 meter run.
The Cougars will be back in action in two weeks when they head back to Clemson to the SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held February 24-25.
February 12, 2006 - The Citadel Women's Track Sets Five School Records
Clemson, S.C. - The Citadel women's track and field team set five more Citadel records over the course of three days and two indoor track meets.
Jodi Whittle and Tasha Sanders traveled to Appalachian State for an indoor meet on Thursday evening in an attempt to capture the 55 meter and 55 meter hurdles records.
"The NCAA now runs 60 meters and there are not very many meets that still run the 55 meter distance and we wanted to give them a chance at the records," said head track coach Jody Huddleston.
Whittle finished fifth running the 55 meters in 7.25 and breaking Latrice Sales mark of 7.38 set in 2000. Sanders followed with a second place finish in the 55 meter hurdles running 8.97 and breaking Peaches Hudson's mark of 9.18 set in 2001.
They met the team in Clemson on Friday for the Tiger Invitational where the ladies broke three more records on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs got things rolling in the first event, placing eighth in the distance medley relay in a school record time of 13:09.86, breaking the mark of 13:17.27 run earlier in the season. Relay members were Sarah Strickland, Whittle, Megan Jenkins and Erin Ritter.
Strickland, Jenkins and Ritter then teamed with Christine DeVasto to finish 13th in the 4 x 400 relay in a season best time of 4:18.96 and the fifth best time in school history. Freshman Sarah Strickland lowered the record (5:32.26) she broke earlier this season, running the mile in 5:25.34.
Freshman Megan Jenkins broke the fifth mark of the weekend with a time of 2:23.69 in the 800 meters. She also lowered the record (2:27.18) she set last weekend at North Carolina.
For the first time this season junior Stephanie McNeill did not break the school record in the 20 lb. weight throw finishing 10th with a very impressive throw of 51-7.75. She did, however, add two feet to her shot put throw from last week, tossing a 44-1.25 and finishing fourth in the field of 42 throwers.
Junior Laura Hewston became only the second women's indoor track runner to run under 20 minutes for the 5,000 meters. She ran a 19:26.34 and finished ninth. Sharon Hacker owns the women's indoor 5k record of 19:09.21 set in 2002.
Next up, the Bulldogs will compete at the Southern Conference indoor championships at Clemson University February 24-25.
February 12, 2006 - Noreen, Hubbard Set School Records; Atias Captures 3000 Meters
CLEMSON, S.C. ? For the second weekend in a row, the Davidson men's track runners junior Douglas Noreen (Apex, N.C.) and sophomore Ryan Hubbard (Charlotte, N.C.) set new indoor school records, while sophomore Megal Atias (Maccabim-Reut, Israel) paced the women's team as both squads participated in the Clemson Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11.
Noreen, who raced to a school record in the mile run last weekend at the Carolina Invitational, earned a third place showing in the 800 meter with a new school and personal best time of 1:56.02. The previous mark had been held by Greg Foreman set back in 1985 with a time of 1:56.32. Right behind Noreen was sophomore Brad Troxell (Fort Collins, Colo.) with a time of 1:57.69, good for fifth place.
Hubbard broke his school record that he set last weekend at the Carolina Invitational in the 200 meter with a new time of 22.94, five-tenths of a second off his pervious mark of 22.99.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Wildcat men were sophomore Sam Morris (Seattle, Wash.) in the mile run (4:26.33, seventh place), and freshmen Lance Harden (Apex, N.C.) in the 3000 meter (8:49.79, eighth place) and James Garrett (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) in the 5000 meter (16:17.25, eighth place).
On the women's side, Atias raced to a first place showing in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:16.83. Her time was thirty-one hundredths of a second off the school record set by Kathy Beach in 1992. Following Atias was senior Allie Martin (Orland, Fla.) with a time of 10:30.37 and an eighth-place finish.
Also scoring solid runs for the women's team was freshman Caroline Sanker (Rocky River, Ohio) in the mile run with a time of 5:19.99, good for 12th place, and sophomore Colleen McKown (Penrose, N.C.) in the 800 meter with an 18th place finish and a team best time of 2:24.13.
Both track teams will now prepare themselves for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships when the Wildcats travel back to Clemson, S.C. on Feb. 24-25.
February 10, 2006 - Black, Phoenix Excel at Carolina Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Elon University's Alana Black turned in another record-breaking performance Friday night at the Carolina Classic women's indoor track meet, scampering to a program-best time of 2:18.12 in the 800-meter run at the Eddie Smith Field House on the University of North Carolina campus.
Black finished fifth out of 32 athletes in the event while improving upon her own school record of 2:19.63, set last month. Teammates Chavanne Hubbard (8th/2:19.58) and Grace Ilevbare (16th/2:25.99) also recorded solid performances in the 800-meter run.
Phoenix sprinter Dominique Price made another strong showing, ending up sixth out of 32 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles. She was clocked at 8.89 seconds in the preliminaries and at 8.81 seconds in the finals, narrowly missing her own program milestone of 8.77 seconds, set last week.
Price also fell just shy of advancing to the final round of the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.04 seconds. The last competitor to qualify for the finals sprinted to an 8.00-second finish. Price owns the Elon record at 7.94 seconds, set last week.
Phoenix pole vaulter Jessica Clendenning leaped to a distance of 11-05.75 (3.50 meters), landing in a tie for third place out of 11 athletes. Last week, she established a new program plateau for that event with a vault of 11-09.75 (3.60 meters).
Distance duo Alissa Wilke and Colleen McCarthy fared well for the Phoenix in the 3000-meter run. Wilke was clocked at 10:55.10 for sixth place out of 16 runners. McCarthy crossed the line at 11:08.51 for ninth place.
February 11, 2006 - Mullen Leads Lady Paladins At Clemson Indoor Classic
Clemson, S.C. -- Sophomore Rebecca Mullen scored a second place finish in the women's 800m to lead a trio of Lady Paladins in the top 10 at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Classic Saturday in Clemson, S.C.
Mullen continued her strong performances posting a time of 2:16.75 to finish less than three tenths of a second behind Clemson's Patrice McMillan. McKenzie Sharpe finished fifth in 2:19.35 while freshman Lindsey Barker rounded out Furman's top 10 finishers with an eighth place showing in 2:21.92.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Mullen scored a first place finish last month at the Noswinger Foundation Invitational and fourth place finish in the 800m at the Taarheel Invitational.
Sophomore Chibuzo Aguocha also grabbed a top 10 finish placing eighth in the women's long jump. Aguocha's distance of 18'3-1/4" helped the Lady Paladin standout finish ahead of more than 30 athletes.
Furman freshman Patrick Morgan, running as an individual, claimed first in the men's 800m in 1:55.28.

February 12, 2006 - Three Runners Win at Valentine Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.--Three Chattanooga runners won events at the Valentine Invitational held at Middle Tennessee State University.
Freshman Kevin Huwe won in his second collegiate event, pacing the field in the 3000 meters with a winning time of 8:42.52. Robert Hatcher claimed the 800 meter title, finishing in 1:58.02.
Senior Shannon Wommack won her 11th consecutive indoor event, winning the one mile run with a time of 5.01.01. Sabrina Lefort finished third and Ashley Meagher finished sixth. The win was Wommack’s third of the season in three different events. She won the 5000 meters on Friday at the Iowa State Classic and the 3000 meters at the McRavy Memorial (Univ. of Kentucky).
Senior Linas Salkauskas was second in the one mile run, finishing one second behind winner Jacob Korir of Eastern Kentucky.
The track team will compete at the Tennessee Indoor Classic next weekend in a final meet before the Southern Conference Indoor Track Championships.
February 9, 2006 - Bethay leads successful Terrier track & field performance
Senior Katon Bethay's win in the shot put highlighted a strong showing by the Wofford indoor track & field team at the Valentine Open in Boone, N.C., Thursday. The Terriers captured five top-five results overall in the second meet of the season.
Bethay outdistanced the rest of the field in the event with his heave of 53'3" (16.23m). The mark was nearly six feet further than the second-place distance.
In the men's track events, Alex Love earned a third-place time of 7.84 in the 55-meter hurdles. Jason McElveen was the team's top finisher in the 55m and 200 with times of 6.93 and 23.94, respectively, for a 13th-place time in both races.
Michael Lance placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 54.53, while Trey Antley posted an 11th-place time of 5:10.19 in the mile. In the 3,000 Chris Williams tallied a team-best time of 10:42.21 on his way to a 23rd-place result.
On the women's side, the top Wofford field event finish also came in the shot put with a third-place mark of 34'2" (10.41m) by Crystal Belcher.
Lauren Bosshardt, who last week set a school record in the 5,000, registered a second-place time of 11:16.29 in the 3,000. Jaya Abraham also notched a top-five time with her fifth-place finish of 5:50.98 in the mile.
The Terriers' top times in the women's 55 and 400 came from Rachel Hyatt, as she placed 14th and eighth with times of 8.22 and 1:11.64, respectively.
Kara Bennewitz led the Wofford pack in the 200 with an 11th-place time of 31.23 and Ashley Adamson was the top Terrier in the 800 with her time of 2:48.02 to finish 10th.
Wofford will head to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Classic this weekend as it continues its indoor campaign.
