Davidson 23, Appalachian State 17
Appalachian State 40, Newberry 9
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University wrestling suffered a damaging 23-17 defeat at the hands of Southern Conference-foe Davidson but rebounded to rout Newberry, 40-9, on Tuesday night at Varsity Gym. With the split, Appalachian remained above .500 overall at 7-6-1 on the season but fell below .500 in SoCon action at 1-2.
In an up-and-down tilt with Davidson (4-5-1, 1-1-1 SoCon), ASU fell behind 7-0, rebounded to tie the match at 7-7, went down by seven again at 14-7, only to rally once again to take a 17-14 lead with two bouts remaining. However, Davidson’s Patrick Coman pinned Appalachian’s Adam Wilson at 125 pounds and, despite a valiant effort, senior Tim Goodwin fell to DC’s Travis Hunter in overtime at 133 pounds to seal the Mountaineers’ fate. Appalachian was without two of its strongest wrestlers, 133-pounder Terreyl Williams and 141-pounder Marcus Cox, who were both sidelined due to injury.
Despite the heartbreaking loss to the Wildcats, the Apps responded with a convincing 40-9 triumph over Newberry. Pins by Wilson and 165-pounder Lee Roper and an 11-3 major decision by Josh Carroll at 197 pounds highlighted the easy victory.
Mountaineer sophomore Scott Ervin kept his undefeated campaign intact by scoring a 2-1 win over Davidson’s Matt Pendle and a 5-2 decision over Newberry’s Brandon Kelly. Ervin, the nation’s 18th-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, upped his flawless record to 20-0 on the season.
Appalachian returns to the mat on Saturday when it travels to face rival Chattanooga. The match is set for 2 p.m. at UTC’s Maclellan Gym.
