Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Southern Conference today named Western Carolina women’s basketball player Lauren Powell as the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of December 7.

Powell, a sophomore from Asheville, N.C., averaged 13.3 points per game last week helping the Lady Catamounts to a 2-1 record.  The guard opened the week with 14 points in the 81-78 win over UNC Asheville in the mountain-rival last Wednesday.  She led WCU in scoring with 14 points in the 83-66 loss to Eastern Kentucky in the Courtyard Classic on Saturday.  Powell wrapped up the week finishing with 12 points in the 69-51 win over Atlantic-10 foe St. Joseph’s on Sunday.  She is among the league’s leaders in scoring with a 12.3 point per game average.

Off the court, Powell boasts a 3.937 GPA and her major is undeclared.  She is a member of the SoCon Honor Roll and received the Commissioner’s Medal in 2006.
