SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that Appalachian State’s Whitney Tossie has been named the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 5.

Tossie, a junior from Oviedo, Fla., helped lead the Mountaineers to a 2-1 record and earned all-tournament honors at the Lady Privateer Classic over the weekend.  The guard scored 12 points and dished out eight assists in ASU’s 84-61 victory over Winthrop last Tuesday.  Tossie grabbed six rebounds and scored 15 points in the 63-62 loss to Atlantic-10 foe Richmond at the Lady Privateer Classic on Friday.  In the Mountaineers 85-70 win over tournament host New Orleans, she was 7-for-9 from the field and scored 21 points and had four steals in the game.

On the week, Tossie averaged 16.0 points per game and a .528 field goal percentage including dishing out 15 assists and tallying 11 steals.  She is among the league’s leaders in assists averaging 3.0 per game.

Other top performers include Chattanooga’s Shanara Hollinquest, Davidson’s Tia Washington, Elon’s Katie Whidden, Furman’s Courtney Opie, Georgia Southern’s Ashley Rivens, Western Carolina’s Chevon Keith and Wofford’s Liz Miller.
