Maryland 30, VMI 9
LEXINGTON, Va.- Maryland took each of the first five matches and seven in all, as the Terrapins claimed a 30-9 dual victory over VMI in front of a crowd of 585 at the Thunderdome on Friday evening.
Maryland (5-3) posted bonus-point wins in five matches, including a forfeit victory at 197 lbs. to begin the match. The Keydets (0-1) high point of the night came at 149 lbs., when senior Sam Alvarenga improved his overall record to 10-2 on the season with a 6-2 decision over Maryland junior Andrew Schlaffer, the defending ACC champion at 149.
“We lost to a better team tonight, that’s for sure,” said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. “We looked flat all night. Corry (Murray) was wrestling his first match of the season coming off of an injury, he’s been back for not even a whole week, so it was good to see him put up a win. Sam (Alvarenga) got a good win, beating the defending ACC champion. Overall though, I was not pleased with our technical skills or our composure tonight. We got outwrestled from the first whistle to the last with few exceptions.”
After Maryland freshman Hudson Taylor was awarded the forfeit victory at 197, teammate Jerry Afari increased the Terps’ lead to 9-0 with his 4-3 defeat of Scott Buhman, handing the Keydet senior only his third loss of the season against eight wins. The lead increased again as the match moved to the lightweights, with UM sophomore James Knox posting a 26-8 technical fall victory in a match that was stopped at the 6:05 mark.
Despite his best efforts, junior Tyler Anthony was unable to stop the bleeding for the Keydets, as he fell by a 3-1 margin at 133 lbs. to freshman John Kohler, increasing the deficit to 17-0. Charlie Pinto capped the run for the visitors, as he posted a 16-4 major decision at 141 lbs. over Keydet frosh Brandon Franklin.
Next came the 149 lb. match, where Alvarenga and Schlaffer entered the third period knotted at two. Thirty seconds into the final period, Alvarenga took a 3-2 lead with an escape, while a late takedown and the riding time point increased his lead to 6-2 at the final buzzer.
Using the momentum created by Alvarenga’s win, junior Tommy Cunningham improved his overall record to 8-1 with a 6-2 win against Terrapin sophomore Mike McGill, cutting the margin to 21-6. But that was as close as the Keydets got on the night, as Maryland senior Jason Kiessling posted his tenth win of the season with a 23-7 technical fall victory at 165 lbs., increasing the lead to 26-6.
Freshman Mike Letts scored a 12-3 major decision victory at 174 lbs. over VMI junior Dustin McCabe, while the final match of the night saw the Keydets’ Corry Murray post a 8-3 decision in his first action of the season, making the final score 30-9 in favor of the visitors.
The Keydets must regroup quickly, as they return to action on Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open, hosted by Penn State. The Terrapins resume action next Saturday, as they face off with both Rutgers and Rider.
