GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro records four fall victories as the Spartans top Campbell 37-12 in their opening dual match of the season on Thursday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium.
With the victory, Jason Loukides picks up his first dual win as UNCG’s head coach.
Junior Jeff Hedges put the Spartans (1-0) out in front 6-0 after the first match by recording a fall victory over Richard Apolinar in 5:19 in the 125 lbs. weight class. Campbell followed with a 9-6 win in the 133 lbs. weight class. However, junior Chris Bencivenga, who is ranked 20th this week in the 141 lbs. weight class, picked up another fall victory for the Spartans by pinning Caleb Lesnoff in 1:55.
Senior Andrew Krieger recorded a 9-1 major decision victory over Chris Mazzatta at 149 lbs. weight class. Campbell claimed the next two matches, but Craig McIntosh picked up the Spartans third fall victory by pinning Dillon Landi in 5:33.
After a Campbell forfeit at 184 lbs., freshman Nick Clark recorded a fall victory over Rob Yoder in 23 seconds at the 197 lbs. weight class. Junior Joe Sheffield sealed up the victory with a 6-1 win over Jeremiah Fennell at
285 lbs.
UNCG plays host to the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30 at the Greensboro Coliseum. The tournament will feature six nationally-ranked teams as well as 67 ranked individuals.
