Cullowhee, N.C. ?  Top-seeded UNC Greensboro slipped past fifth-seeded Western Carolina 1-0 in the second semifinal match of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament at Catamount Athletic Complex on the campus of Western Carolina University Friday night.

Senior Deven Beachum scored the winning goal for the Spartans at the 18:29 mark.  Beachum, a three-time all-conference team member, gathered a pass from second-team all-conference honoree Kelly Attayek and drove the ball into the upper left corner of the Western Carolina net.  The goal was Beachum’s eighth this season.

In the second half the Catamounts out shot the Spartans 11-1 but UNCG goalkeeper Katherine Ryan, all-conference second-team honoree, held steady in front of the net for the Spartans and recorded four saves and her eighth shutout of the season.

Western Carolina wraps-up its 2006 season with a 10-8-3 overall record.

UNC Greensboro improves its unbeaten streak to 13 and overall record to 12-7-2.

The Spartans will face three-seeded Furman in the championship match at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.  The two battled back on October 20 and the Spartans came away with a 4-2 victory.  The championship match will be broadcast on SoCon.TV.
