THE CITADEL COMPETES AT EAST STROUDSBURG OPEN
East Stroudsburg, Pa. ? Senior Mark Thompson, who wrestled unattached, went 5-0 at 197 pounds and senior Travis Piccard took second place at 157 pounds to lead The Citadel wrestling team at the East Stroudsburg Open in East Stroudsburg, Pa. on Saturday. The event was hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
Thompson started his day with an 8-3 decision over Peter Grodziak of Shippensburg. After an 8-1 victory against Ed Mobley of Army, Thompson advanced to the semifinals with a pin of Army’s Garrett Hunter in 1:29. He went on to the finals of the 197-pound weight class due to a medical forfeit and took the top spot at the podium with a 6-3 decision over Chad Unger of Penn State.
Piccard, who finished third in last year’s event, earned a fall in his first match of the day as he pinned Justin McCutcheon of Middlesex County College in 4:30. He moved on to the finals with three straight decisions: a 7-1 victory over Spencer Hollerith of Maryland; a 5-1 triumph against Jon Clemens of Penn State; and a 5-1 win over Matthew Button of Harvard. Piccard lost a narrow 4-3 decision to James Strouse of Hostra in the finals and went home with second place at 157 pounds.
The next highest finisher for the Bulldogs was junior Michael Arias, who finished fifth at 141 pounds with a record of 7-2. Arias’ first bout was a 19-9 major decision over Rob Cross of Shippensburg, but he fell into the consolation bracket after dropping a 16-0 technical fall decision to Charles Griffin of Hofstra. Arias then ran off six straight victories, including a 15-0 technical fall against Fred Rodgers of Rider; a 16-1 technical fall over Ryan McGarity of East Stroudsburg; and a 15-0 technical fall against his teammate, freshman Derek Royster who wrestled unattached in the event. Arias’ podium hopes ended after a 5-0 loss to Matt Ciasulli of Lehigh, but he defeated Steve Fehnel of Maryland with a 9-2 decision to place fifth.
Other placers for the Bulldogs were junior Darius Caldwell, who finished seventh at 174 pounds, and junior John Buck, who ended up seventh in the heavyweight division.
The grapplers will be in action again Dec. 1-2 at the Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. All of the latest from The Citadel wrestling team is available at www.CitadelSports.com.

DAVIDSON PLACES EIGHTH AT NAVY CLASSIC
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Davidson wrestling squad scored 42.5 points at the Navy Classic on Saturday, good enough for eighth out of 13 teams, and senior Marcus Boyd had the best finish for the Wildcats placing third at 174 pounds. Freshman Ben Altman scored a fifth-place finish at 125 and sophomore Sam O'Hair came in sixth for 184-pounders.
Seeded fourth for the meet, Boyd got off to a fine start by pinning Duquesne's Ryan Sula in 1:31, but faltered against Bucknell's Shane Riccio in the next bout, 10-3. In the consolation bracket, Boyd could not be beaten, winning by decisions of 11-6, 12-8 and 10-6 before the battle for third place. His opponent was Joe Clutter of West Virginia, who ended up getting disqualified, making Boyd the third-place finisher.
Like Boyd, Altman got off to a fine start, topping Bucknell's Greg Hart, 7-4. He did not fare as well the next match, dropping a 15-7 decision to Jason Guffey of Bloomsburg. But in the wrestlebacks, Altman ripped off four consecutive victories before falling to Navy's Alex Usztics. So Altman was pitted against Guffey again, and judging by Altman's 8-4 victory, he learned something from the first battle.
O'Hair began with a difficult task as he was paired up with the fifth-seeded Chance Litton of West Virginia. Despite a valiant effort, O'Hair dropped a 4-2 decision, sending him to the consolation bracket. He battled back, however, with 7-0 and 3-1 decisions, then a victory by fall in 1:04 over Bloomsburg's Eric Shaw. But fourth-seeded Matthew Parsons of Navy defeated O'Hair by a major decision, 10-1, and second-seeded Jared Ricotta of Duquesne won the fifth-place bout.
At 141, senior Jim Avola was seeded fifth, but suffered a 5-2 loss in the first round. In the consolation bracket, he picked up a pair of pins before being pinned himself, keeping him from placing for the Wildcats.
Junior Trebor Clavette was the top seed at 165, and after three consecutive victories by decision, was paired up against Andrew Rendos of Bucknell for the championship bout. Unfortunately, Clavette was disqualified and was not awarded a place.
Freshman Mike Waters opened the tournament seeded sixth, only to falter in his first bout to fall into the consolation bracket. Following a medical default and a 14-3 triumph, Waters came up just short of placing due to a 3-2 loss.
Davidson next takes to the mats in two weeks when it hosts the Davidson Open on Dec. 2.
