SPARTANBURG, SC -- The 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship kicks off this Thursday, November 16 and will continue through Sunday, November 19 with the championship match. All rounds will be played at the Holmes Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
College of Charleston clinched the top seed in the tournament and claimed its sixth consecutive regular season title after going 17-1 in conference play. Furman and Appalachian State tied for second place at the end of the regular season finishing with 15-3 records. Furman garnered the two seed after winning the tie-break over Appalachian State. Davidson and Chattanooga finished the regular season tied with a 10-8 record with Davidson earning the fourth seed in the tournament after defeating Chattanooga during the regular season.
Elon and UNC Greensboro finished the conference season with 9-9 records. Elon moved into the number six spot by virtue of its win over College of Charleston. Georgia Southern, Western Carolina, The Citadel and Wofford round out the field of 11.
First round action begins at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday with eighth-seeded Georgia Southern taking on the ninth-seeded Western Carolina. At 12:30 p.m., seventh-seeded UNC Greensboro will face the tenth-seeded Bulldogs from The Citadel. Elon plays the 11th seed Wofford in the last match of the round at 3:00 p.m.
The second round kicks-off with Davidson and Chattanooga facing each other at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. College of Charleston, Furman and Appalachian State will await the winners of the first round matches on Thursday.
Winners of the second round matches will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, November 18. The first semifinal match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the second match starting at 3:30 p.m. The championship match will take place on Sunday, November 19 at 2:00 p.m.
