SoCon Announces Football Players of the Week

 SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today named its Football Players of the Week for games played on November 11. The Citadel’s Tory Cooper was selected the Offensive Player of the Week while Elon’s Chad Nkang earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards earned the Freshman of the Week award.

 

Cooper, a junior 5-7, 181-pound junior from Effingham, S.C., led the Bulldogs to a 48-21 win over VMI on Saturday. The running back accounted for three touchdowns, a career best, and rushed for 150 yards on 20 carries. Cooper scored the first touchdown of the game, a 13 yard run in the ninth minute of the game. He added his second on a 26 yard run in the second quarter and had a 14-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Cooper has 1,288 all-purpose yards on the season.

 

Other top performers included Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards, Elon’s Michael Mayers, Georgia Southern’s Jayson Foster and Wofford’s Will Rutherford.

recorded eight tackles including six solo stops, two tackles for loss and a sack in Elon’s 45-0 win over North Carolina A&T. Early in the third quarter, Nkang returned an interception 47 yards for the first defensive touchdown of his career. He leads the SoCon averaging 11.7 tackles per game and is fourth in the NCAA.

 

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Pierre Banks, The Citadel’s James Wilson, Georgia Southern’s Branden Daniel and Wofford’s Brandon Berry.

 

Edwards, a 6-0, 165 true freshman from Greenwood, S.C., led the Mountaineers to a 31-9 win over Western Carolina to finish the regular season 7-0 in league play. The quarterback accounted for 204 yards of total offense and added three touchdowns. Edwards ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 85 yards and one score on the day. His touchdown pass was the 11th of the season for Edwards, breaking the previous freshman record of 10 set by D.J. Campbell in 1989. His total rushing yards of 685 is the second-most ever by an ASU quarterback regardless of class.
