Conway, S.C. ? Deanna Patrick had a match-high 21 kills in the 3-2 (28-30, 30-23, 31-29, 28-30, 12-15) loss to Coastal Carolina in non-conference action at Kimbel Arena in Conway, S.C.
Annie Uthe, who hit a team-high .283, followed Patrick with 16 kills. She also had six digs and two blocks.
Tiffany Blum tallied 14 kills on .273. She was followed by Emily Sawin and Sarah Voss with 13 kills apiece.
Marie Dobrenz anchored the defense as she came up with 19 digs, followed by Lindsey Kane and Megan Parkerson with 15. Alexis Lowes tallied 10 digs.
Kane also dished out 71 assists and five digs on .333 hitting.
Jill Nyhof led the Chanticleers (7-21) with 17 kills on .500 hitting. Brett Starbuck came up with a match-high 24 digs to lead Coastal Carolina defensively.
The Cougars return to Southern Conference action on Wednesday when they face Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga., at 7 p.m. Charleston will return home on Nov. 4 to face Chattanooga at 2 p.m. and on Nov. 5 with Western Carolina for its final two matches of the season.
Furman 3, Elon 0
ELON, N.C. ? Whitney Purser posted 13 kills and 13 digs to lead the Furman Lady Paladins to a 3-0 (30-20, 30-28, 30-27) win over the Elon Phoenix in Southern Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night in Alumni Gym.
Kerry Wooten posted nine kills and six total blocks for Furman while Alison West and Nicole Palazzo added eight kills each. Kim Tonkin recorded 13 digs along with two service aces while Courtney Stewardson tallied six aces to go along with 36 assists.
Britany Westphal led Elon with 13 kills and Shelley MacBean paced the defense with 11 digs. Juliena Gigon added nine digs and six total blocks while Natalie Moore posted 21 assists.
In game one, Elon (11-15, 8-7 SoCon) jumped to an early lead and pushed the advantage to six at 11-6 before the Lady Paladins used a 6-0 run behind the serve of Ally Hock to knot the game at 11. After a 12-12 tie, Furman scored the next four points to take a 16-12 lead. The Lady Paladins then outscored the Phoenix 10-4 to take a 10-point lead at 26-16 before closing the game 30-20 on a kill from Purser.
Game two saw neither team lead by more than three as the squads battled through 16 ties. After a 15-15 tie, the Lady Paladins tallied the next three points to go up 18-15 but Elon came back to knot the game at 19 on a kill from Stefanie Meyers. After a 20-20 tie, Elon took a 23-21 advantage but Furman again tied the game 24-24 on a block by Hock and Wooten. After a 28-28 tie, Furman posted the next two points on a block and a kill from Wooten to finish the game 30-28. Wooten posted five kills and three total blocks in the game.
In game three, Furman (15-10, 11-3) took and early lead and led by nine at 15-6. But Elon used a 10-1 run behind the serve of Gigon to knot the game at 16. After a 19-19 tie, Furman regained the lead and led by as much as two before Elon tied the game again at 24-24. After a 25-25 deadlock, Elon scored two points on a kill from Westphal and a service ace by Moore to go ahead 27-25. After a timeout, the Lady Paladins got back-to-back kills from Palazzo to tie the game at 27. Furman tallied the next three points on a kill from West and two service aces to close the game 30-27. Purser recorded six of her 13 kills in the final game.
Elon returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 5 in a 3 p.m. match with Georgia Southern in Alumni Gym. Furman will next be in action on Saturday, Nov. 4 in a 2 p.m. home match with Appalachian State.
UNCG 3, North Carolina A&T 2
GREENSBORO, NC -- Theresa Hart had 23 kills and Kaitlyn Nortz added 20 kills as UNC Greensboro held off host North Carolina A&T for a five-game win, 26-30, 30-20, 30-24, 27-30 and 15-12, in a cross-city non-conference women’s volleyball match Tuesday night.
Branagan Fuller added 15 kills for the Spartans (18-11), which snapped a three-match losing skid. Lisa Fawell had 65 assists and 10 digs for UNCG.
North Carolina A&T (15-10) had 13 kills from Brendan Chatman and 12 kills by Darlene Mitchell.
After dropping the opening game, the Spartans came to life, hitting .385 in the second game for the 30-24 win.
The 18 wins are the most by a UNCG team since 1995 when the Spartans went 24-4 in winning the Big South regular season title. The Spartans won 17 in 1997.
UNCG will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Georgia Southern in a Southern Conference match beginning at 7 pm.
