UNCG Defender Shannon Donovan Earns SoCon Women's Soccer Player of the Year

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference women’s soccer coaches have selected the all-conference selections for the 2006 season as well as the Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The coaches selections are based on nominations from their teams.  Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

 

UNC Greensboro had six players earn all-league honors, including the 2006 Player of the Year Shannon Donovan. The defender started 14 matches and anchored a Spartan defense that allowed only 21 goals on the season and recorded six shutouts. She also notched 17 points during the regular season with five goals and seven assists.  She was also named to the all-conference first team along with forward Deven Beachum and midfielders Jessica Patterson and Karla Davis. Forward Kelly Attayek and goalkeeper Katherine Ryan received second-team accolades. 

 

Davidson’s Suzanne Sittko and UNC Greensboro’s Jennifer Bronson were tabbed the Co-Freshmen of the Year by the coaches. Sittko recorded 17 points this season for the Wildcats which tied for fourth in the conference. The midfielder averaged 1.00 points per match ranking her fifth in the conference.  Bronson started 19 matches in her first year for the Spartans.  She tallied 14 points on five goals and four assists.

 

Six-year UNC Greensboro head coach Eddie Radwanski was named the Coach of the Year by his peers. Radwanski led the Spartans to a 9-0-1 unbeaten record in conference play this season and a 10-7-2 overall record.  He guided UNC Greensboro to its third regular season title under his direction.  This is the first Coach of the Year honor for Radwanski.

 

Furman had three players named to the first team, led by forward Anna Betton. Gena Villari recieved first-team honors at the midfield position with defender Stacy Simpson anchoring the Paladins defensive effort, while defenders Kate Johnson and Mickey Palanza were named to the second team.  College of Charleston landed three on the all-league squads. Forward Teryn Schuetz, mid fielder Caroline Wertis and defender Danielle Jordan represent the Cougars on the second team. Georgia Southern forward Ashley Toussiant, Western Carolina mid fielder Heather Dittmer, Davidson defender Nancy Haskill and Chattanooga goalkeeper Stacey Mattheissen round out the first team with The Citadel’s Rachelle Ornelas, Appalachian State’s Jackie Hoffman, Wofford’s Jessica Connett and Elon’s Moncia Houseworth completing the second team.
