Greenville, S.C. -- Four different Paladins netted goals and Derek Gleason recorded his first career shutout as Furman blanked Lipscomb 5-0 in the regular season finale Monday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Josh Mattock opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his first career goal. Patrick Murray served a corner kick to the top of the six yard box and Mattock hammered it past Lipscomb keeper Danny Prichard at 21:10.
Murray upped the lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute. Kevin Traynor played a long ball over the top to Murray who slotted a low shot past Prichard for his third goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, Dominic Cianciarulo fed a though ball into the left side of the box. Robert Hunter beat the defense to the pass and bested the keeper at 61:09 to give Furman a 3-0 cushion.
Phillip Raby tallied the fourth goal of the game at 71:06. Takato Ban and Rob Victor combined to get the ball to Raby at the top of the six yard box and the junior tapped a shot into net for his second tally of the season.
Hunter capped the scoring at 73:43 dribbling behind the defense down the left channel and ripping a shot past a sprawling Jake Goergen to secure the final 5-0 margin.
Furman held a 21-9 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Gleason, making his first start of the season on Senior Day, notched two saves to garner the shutout. A total of 22 Paladins saw action in the regular season finale.
The win improved the Paladins to 10-6-1 while Lipscomb slipped to 5-10-2.
Furman opens Southern Conference Tournament play Saturday evening when it hosts sixth-seeded Elon at 6:00. The winner of Saturday’s match will battle the winner of Georgia Southern/Davidson on November 3, in the SoCon Semifinals at Stone Stadium.
