SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today named its Football Players of the Week for games played on October 21. The Citadel’s Tory Cooper was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Chattanooga’s Chris Camacho earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards and Furman’s Jordan Sorrells shared the Freshman of the Week award.

Cooper, a junior from Effingham, S.C., recorded a career-high 204 yards on 36 carries in the Bulldogs 30-27 overtime win against Western Carolina on Saturday. The running back made the position change from wide receiver at the end of last season.  Cooper tallied 251 yards of total offense, including six catches, and sealed the win for The Citadel over Western Carolina with an eight-yard touchdown run in overtime, his second touchdown of the game and fifth for the season. The last time a Bulldog running back rushed for 200 yards was in 2001 when Maurice Murphy totaled 209 yards against VMI.

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards, Chattanooga’s Michael Johnson, Western Carolina’s Darius Fudge and Wofford’s Josh Collier.

Camacho, a junior from Los Angeles, Calif., led Chattanooga’s defensive effort on Saturday. The safety had a season-high 13 tackles, seven solo, and added a tackle for loss. Camacho had a key tackle in the first half when he ran down a Furman receiver and tackled him at the 10-yard line, knocking the ball loose and keeping the Paladins from scoring a touchdown.

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Corey Lynch, The Citadel’s Andrew Rowell, Elon’s Danny Boback, Georgia Southern’s John Mohring, Western Carolina’s Shelton Gaffney and Wofford’s Justin Franklin.

Edwards and Sorrells share the Freshman of the Week honor this week. Edwards, a quarterback from Greenwood, S.C., led Appalachian State to a 27-20 double overtime win at Georgia Southern. He threw for 210 yards and ran for 140 in the win. Edwards gave ASU the lead midway through the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run and tied the game with a 65-yard touchdown pass to William Mayfield to send the game to overtime.

Sorrells, a quarterback from Greenville, S.C., led the Paladins to a 28-22 overtime win over Chattanooga on Saturday. In just his second career start, Sorrells completed 22-of-29 passes for a career-high 335 yards and two touchdowns. He engineered a 10 play, 69 yard drive with 1:39 left in regulation to set up a Scott Beckler game-tying field goal. He completed the game-winning strike to Cedrick Gipson in the first overtime period. His 335 yards passing tied the Furman passing yardage mark for a freshman and is fifth highest in single game totals in school history.
