Davidson 1, College of Charleston 0
Charleston, S.C. Freshman Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) picked up her third game-winning goal of the season when she found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to send the Davidson women's soccer team to a 1-0 win on the road against College of Charleston on Thursday evening in Southern Conference action. Davidson ran its SoCon record to a 4-3-0 mark and its overall record to 8-6-2 on the year. Charleston, who had won three of its past five contests, dropped to 4-3-0 in league play and under .500 overall at 6-7-2.
Both squads played to a 0-0 draw through the first stanza. Davidson looked to strike early when junior Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) took a shot on goal that went high just four minutes into the game. The Wildcats and Cougars each got off five shots going into halftime.
Much was the same through most of the second half with both teams going back and forth on the field, but neither team was able to find a goal. Sittko changed all that though with one kick in the 83rd minute of play. The freshman midfielder worked deep into the Cougar box and received a cross from sophomore Nelly Meeks (Eaglewood, Colo.) and Sittko proceeded to net her fourth marker of the season and the game-winner. The assist was Meeks'
first of the season.
The shutout was the Wildcats seventh of the year, three away from matching their total of a year ago. In addition, the shutout win was also the Wildcats third in league play.
Six different players led Davidson to a 13-10 advantage in shots for the game, with 10 of those shots coming on goal.
Matching her career-high in shutouts, five, with the win in goal was junior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.), who registered four saves between the posts. Erin Smith got the nod for the Cougars and stopped nine of the Wildcats? 13 shots.
Davidson returns home for its next contest when the Wildcats will host the 2005 SoCon tournament champion, Western Carolina, on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
Appalachian State 2, Elon 1
ELON, N.C. ? The Appalachian State Mountaineer women’s soccer squad scored two first half goals and then held off a late charge by the host Elon Phoenix to earn a 2-1 Southern Conference victory from Rudd Field on Thursday afternoon. Elon fell to 5-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play while ASU improved to 8-8-0, 4-4-0.
Caroline Lowe put the Mountaineers on top 1-0 in the ninth minute when she collected Dana Murphy’s cross at the far side of the goal mouth and deposited it for her fourth score of the season. Paige Morrow’s fifth marker of the season extended the ASU lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute. Morrow’s header beat Elon’s Lizz Johnson for the tally. Brooke Humphrey and Staci Smith were credited with assists on the play.
Appalachian State looked to be heading to a 2-0 victory, but Elon fought back and trimmed the margin to 2-1 with 5:14 left in regulation. Alisa Petitt knocked home her team-leading sixth goal of the year, and her fifth in the last four games, after taking a pass from Meagan Aho and beating Emma White to the lower right of the goal. Petitt ended up with the ball after a pass between two ASU defenders off the foot of Aho. The Phoenix tried to keep up the attack and even the score to force overtime, but was unable to score again.
Johnson recorded six saves on the day while White collected five stops. Both keepers went the distance.
Both squads took 11 shots, but Appalachian State held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Elon held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Phoenix will hit the road for its next contest, visiting Wofford for a 2:00 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon. Appalachian State will visit Georgia Southern in an identical start time on Sunday.
