SoCon Announces Football Players of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today named its Football Players of the Week for games played on September 3. The Citadel’s Duran Lawson was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Elon’s Corey Weaver earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards earned the Freshman of the Week award.

 

Lawson, a junior from Conway, S.C., led the Bulldogs to a 24-21 win over Chattanooga on Saturday.  The quarterback had a career day against the Mocs, throwing for 324 yards on 24-of-32 passing. He also added 27 rushing yards on 11 carries and was responsible for two Bulldog touchdowns through the air. He became the first Citadel quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards since 2003 and his 324 passing yards ranks eighth in the all-time single game passing records at The Citadel.

 

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s William Mayfield, Chattanooga’s Eldra Buckley, Furman’s Renaldo Gray and Georgia Southern’s Chris Covington.

 

Elon's Corey Weaver

Weaver, a sophomore linebacker from New Bern, N.C., recorded a career-high 25 tackles against Appalachian State on Saturday. The total tackles is the most by an Elon player since Chad Nkang hit the same mark last season against Chattanooga. Weaver tied Nkang and former ASU great Julius Thomas for seventh on the SoCon all-time leaders list for most tackles in a game. He entered the game with just 12 tackles this season and only had 19 total tackles in the 2005 season despite playing all 11 games as a true freshman.

 

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Jerome Touchstone, The Citadel’s Josh Lawson, Chattanooga’s Chris Camacho, Furman’s Andrew Thacker, Georgia Southern’s John Mohring and Wofford’s Brandon Berry.

 

Edwards, a freshman from Greenwood, S.C., picks up his second-straight Freshman of the Week award after leading Appalachian State to a win over Elon. The quarterback posted 263 yards of total offense and accounted for a pair of touchdowns in the 45-21 win. He engineered ASU’s second 500-yard output in his three starts with 15-of-20 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown and adding 70 yards on 15 rushes.

 

Other top freshman performers include The Citadel’s Andrew Roberts, Elon’s Terrell Hudgins, Georgia Southern’s Terrione Benefield and Western Carolina’s Kadeem Morgan.
