Cross Country Results for September 29 & 30

MARCHANT AND CHATTANOOGA PICK UP SECOND PLACE FINISHES

 

Louisville, Ky. ? Senior Lanni Marchant finished second in her third race of the season, leading the women’s team to a second place finish, as the Mocs competed in the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning.

 

Marchant finished with a time of 17:33.38, on the 5,000 meter course behind Louisville’s Tarah McKay in the 273-runner field.

 

For the second time this season, the Lady Mocs fell to Georgia Tech in the team scoring with the Yellow Jackets finishing with 83. Chattanooga finished with 139 points.

 

On the men’s side, redshirt freshman Tim Clark had the top finish for Chattanooga. Clark finished 35th out of 325 runners. Senior Michael Mentz and junior Jeff Taylor finished 40th and 43rd, respectively.

 

Junior Josh McDougal of Liberty University took the individual title finishing the 8,000 meter course in 23:16.96, almost four seconds faster than the runner-up.

 

The men’s team finished 10th overall, scoring 353. Louisville captured the men’s team title with a score of 51.

 

The Mocs return home to host the Front Runner Invitational on Sat., Oct. 14 at Moccasin Bend. The first race will take place at 3:30 p.m.

Davidson Men's Cross Country Finishes 24th at Paul Short Invitational

 

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Davidson men's cross country team competed at the annual Paul Short Invitational on Friday afternoon on the campus of Lehigh University and came in 24th place out of 42 teams.

Sophomore Lance Harden (Apex, N.C.) paced the 'Cats, crossing the finish line 58th with a season best time of 25:20 in the 8K. His time was the 8th fastest Davidson 8K time ever on any course and it's the second straight race Harden has paced the Wildcats.

Junior Sam Morris (Seattle, Wash.) was 103rd with a time of 25:47 and senior Alex Varner (San Rafael, Calif.) crossed 130th with a time of 26:05 to round out the top three for the Davidson men, who collected 676 team points.

The men will next run in the Blue Ridge Mountain Open at Appalachian State on Oct. 13.

Davidson Women's Cross Country finish Ninth at Paul Short Run


DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's cross country team crossed the finish line ninth out of 35 teams at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Junior captain Brenna Burns paced the Wildcats, placing 17th with a time of 21:21, and sophomore Carolina Sanker finished 23rd with a time of 21:24. Both runners were named to the Paul Short All-Invitational team for finishing in the top 25.

Junior Megal Atias (22:21, 64th) and sophomore Lucy Rogers (22:33, 77th) each crossed the finish line in the top-100 for the lady Wildcats, while junior Annie O'Donnell (22:55, 102nd), sophomore Kim Lang (23:51, 168) and freshman Allison Ruhe (24:40, 201) also factored in for the women, who collected 283 points.

"I'm very pleaseed," head coach Jen Straub said. "We've never finished in the top 10. It was a very strong showing."

The women will return to action when they compete at the Covered Bridge Invitational on Oct. 14 in Boone, N.C.

 

Mitchell Leads the Mountaineers With a Top-20 Finish; Team Places 15th at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Appalachian State University men's cross country team, led by red-shirt Freshman Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn.), placed 15th in the 42-team field with a team score of 430 points on Friday at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.

Mitchell placed 18th in the 278-athlete field with a personal best time of 24:51 on the 8,000m course. Following Mitchell, Ryan O'Keefe (Prospect Harbor, Maine) placed 61st (25:23), Brendon Helms(Matthews, N.C.) came in 63rd (23:25), Josh Houser (Alpharetta, Ga.) came in 142nd (26:14), and Alec Meyer (Stafford, Va.) rounded out the ASU scorers with a 146th-place finish (26:15).

In spite of two top-athletes being red-shirted, the freshman and sophomore runners proved to be up to the challenge in their first national meet.

"We were a little down on our place from last season, but the younger runners are progressing well," head coach Mike Curcio said. "We are glad to have the freshman and sophomores able to step it up and compensate for our red-shirted athletes."

The ASU men's cross country team will return closer to home in their next competition, competing at the Bobcat Open in Banner Elk on Saturday, October 6th, starting at 9 a.m.

 

Women's Cross Country Finishes Seventh in 35-Team Field at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Appalachian State University women's cross country team, with three athletes in the top-50 of a 237-athlete field, finished seventh place out of 35 teams with a team score of 267 points on Friday, September 29th at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.

Senior Kasey Smith (Walnut Cove, N.C.) led the Mountaineers with a 25th-place finish with a time of 21:31, 32 places better than her team-leading performance in 2005. Following Smith, Jenna Wrieden (Glendale, Ariz.) finished in 26th (21:33), Meghan Gaffney (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) came in 39th (21:43), Hannah Parks (Kernersville, N.C.) placed 69th (22:25), and Anna Baker (Hatboro, Pa.) rounded out the ASU scorers, coming in 108th (23:01).

"We are very pleased to finish in the position that we did," head coach Mike Curcio said. "Our goal was to be in the top-10, and we were right where we needed to be."

The Mountaineers finished behind only six teams, including ninth-ranked Wisconson and 13th-ranked Princeton.

In Southern Conference competition, the ASU women finished ahead of Davidson for the second consecutive meeting between the two teams. The Wildcats finished in ninth, two spots behind the Mountaineers.

The Appalachian women's cross country team will return close to home when they compete at the Bobcat Open in Banner Elk, N.C. on Saturday, October 6th, starting at 9 a.m.

 

Furman Men, Women Earn Titles at The Citadel Invitational

Albrecht, Johnson take individual titles.

Charleston, S.C. - Eric Albrecht and Brittany Johnson won the men's and women's individual crowns as the Furman cross country teams both won the 26th Annual The Citadel Invitational on Saturday morning at James Island County Park.

Albrecht took the men's top honors with a final time of 25:45.64 on the 8K course. Johnson won the women's competition with a time of 18:38.33 over the 5K course.

Furman won the men's overall competition with a score of 29 team points, distancing itself from second place The Citadel with 40 team points.

On the women's side, Furman narrowly edged College of Charleston by scoring 33 team points to the Cougars 37.

Furman returns to action October 14, as the Paladins host the Furman Invitational.

 

 

Bulldog Men Second, Women Third at the 26th Annual Citadel Invitational

 

 

Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel men finished second while the women placed third Saturday morning at the 26th Annual Citadel Cross Country Invitational, run at James Island County Park. Furman took home both team titles in the collegiate races.

 

Furman took home the men’s team crown with 29 points while The Citadel followed with 40 points. The Bulldogs edged the third-place College of Charleston (57 points) to defeat the Cougars for the second time this season.

 

Individually, Furman’s Eric Albrecht was the top collegiate male finisher with a time of 25:45.64, followed by the College of Charleston’s Max Gustaitis who ran a 26:17.33 in the 8k race. It was the first time in three tries that Gustaitis was able to finish ahead of The Citadel’s Will Wilson, after finishing behind Wilson by three seconds on two separate occasions.

 

The Citadel’s Matt Holmes was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, running the 8k distance in 26:24.92, setting a new personal record. Wilson finished second for the Bulldogs with a time of 27:04.44.

 

On the women’s side, Furman edged the College of Charleston by four points to take home the women’s team title. The Citadel placed third with Charleston Southern placing fourth.

 

Furman’s Brittany Johnson won the women’s individual title with a time of 18:38.33 while the College of Charleston’s Karen Corson was the runner-up, running the 5k course in 18:59.11. Sarah Strickland was the top finisher for the Bulldogs with a time of 19:21.99, setting a new personal record and finishing sixth overall. Senior co-captain Laura Hewston finished one place behind her with a time of 19:31.65.

UNCG’s Rutz finishes eighth, four record personal-bests at Mason Invitational

 

Centreville, VA ? Four runners record their personal best for UNC Greensboro at the Mason Invitational on Saturday. The men’s squad finished with three runners in the Top 20.

 

Xavier Rutz logged a personal-best time of 25:17 and earned eighth place. Josh Wyatt finished 12th and recorded a personal-best, 25:26 while Nicolas Vaccaro earned 16th and finished with a personal-best time of 25:33. Ryan Rodd also registered a personal-best time of 27:00 and finished 65th.

 

The women were led by Jess Weber and Tessa Dispenette. Weber placed 25th in a time of 23:37 and Dispenette finished in 39th with a time of 24:18.

 

Team scores are not available at this time.

 

The Spartans will take a couple weeks off and return to action on October 13 when they travel to Boone, NC for the Blue Ridge Mountain Open.

 

Elon Men's Squad Competes at Mason Invitational

 

MANASSAS, Va.- Ricky Myers led the men's cross country team on Saturday morning at the Mason Cross Country Invitational hosted by George Mason. Myers posted a time of 26:12.90 to finish 34th and set a personal-best.

Eric Lewandowski set a personal best with a time of 26:33.31 to place 47th while Adam Lindsey finished 51st with a time of 26:40.64. Eric Garren ran a 26:52.86 to place 59th while Brian Hunt posted a time of 27:19.65 for a 77th-place finish to round out Elon's top-five.

Jason MacCollum finished 79th with a time of 27:22.78 and Justin Garren placed 92nd with a time of 28:17.04. Andrew Hawkey (107th/29:12.98), Will Bertram (113th/29:56.35), David Wells (114th/30:01.88) and Glen Cornell (117th/30:17.39) all compete for the Phoenix.

The men return to action on Oct. 13 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open in Boone, N.C.

 

Elon Women Finish Fourth at Mason Invitational

 

MANASSAS, Va.- Anna Mae Flynn ran to a 10th-place finish in a field of 109 runners to lead the Elon women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the 12-team field at the Mason Cross Country Invitational.

Flynn posted a time of 22:45.23 on the 6K course. Teammate Caitlin Beeler finished 16th with a time of 23:03.17 while Katelyn Ealer ran a time of 23:08.23 to place 18th. Alissa Wilke finished 37th with a time of 24:12.97 and Jessica Doan placed 40th with a 24:19.91 time to round out Elon's top-five.

Katie White ran a time of 24:26.40 to finish 43rd while Alana Morro placed 45th with a time of 24:30.29 and Amy Sulser ran a time of 24:50.38 to finish 51st. Colleen McCarthy finished 57th with a time of 25:09.03 and Meaghan Dolan finished 74th with a time of 26:11.53.

Elon returns to action on Oct. 13 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open in Boone, N.C.

 

Catamount Cross Country Finishes Fifth & 12th at Greater Louisville Classic

 

Fassinger leads men in fifth; Savery places third to lead women

 

Lousiville, Ky. - Running in the blue division, the Western Carolina Catamount men's cross country team finished fifth out of 31 teams while the women were 12th out of 24 at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday morning.

"We are still not where we need to be, but we are getting better each and every time out," said head coach Danny Williamson. "Today, we got the top runners that are vital to solid finishes, but we just need to work on bunching up the pack and closing the gap between our third, fourth, and fifth runners."

Senior Dan Fassinger led the men with a fifth-place run, turning in a time of 26:10, while sophomore Field Miller gave the Catamounts two in the top 25 with a 24th-place finish with a time of 27:28.

Junior Kerrie Savery paced the women's team with her second-best individual finish of the season placing third while sophomore Skye Aiello ran tenth.

 

College of Charleston’s Corson and Gustaitis Place Second In Citadel Invitational

 

College of Charleston’s woman’s cross country team finished second and the men finished third in The Citadel Invitational on Saturday at James Island County Park.

The women finished with 37 points, behind Furman with 33 points in the 5K race. The men trailed Furman (29 points) and host The Citadel (40 points) in the 8K race.

Karen Corson paced Charleston with a time of 18:59.11 to finish second, and Max Gustaitis posted a second place finish with a 26:17.33.

Wells Trompeter (19:01.04), Amy Laughlin (19:16.45)Heather Clark (19:53.39) and Ashley Arnold (20:07.65) finished in the Top 15 for fourth, fifth, 11th and 15th place, respectively. The men had three more runners in the Top 15 ? Aubrey Darnell (27:16.21), Michael Rella (27:43.75) and Tim Faugl (27:45.68) ? for eighth, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Sarah Massenburg finished 17th with a time of 20:16.89, followed by Lyndsay Smith (21:00.92, 21st) and Sawyer Langston (21:47.97, 27th). In the men’s race, J.C. Koziel finished 18th with a time of 27:58.41, followed by Nate Attard who posted a time of 35:25.43 for 32nd.

Both teams will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to compete in the Winthrop Fall Classic on Oct. 14, before the Southern Conference championship meet on Oct. 28.

 Three Eagles set new Personal Bests at Auburn Cross Country Invitational

 

In their third meet of the season, five Georgia Southern Eagles competed for a total score of 507 points and an 18th place finish against 23 other teams.  The 5k race was run at the Indian Pine’s Golf Course in Auburn, Ala.

 

“When running against teams of such caliber, we have to look at the individual performance, you know” said Head Coach Natalie Smith of the Eagles’ performance today.  “And we had three girls run new personal best times today: Abby Bloom, Laura Fuller and Jessica Kerzie.”

 

Bloom, a junior from Snellville, Ga. was the first GSU runner past the finish line with a career-best time of 18:48.06.  Behind her was Fuller, a freshman from Cartersville, Ga., coming in 99th with a time of 19:15.10.  The third and final personal best time was for senior Kerzie, crossing the finish line in 19:45.94.

 

Also running for Georgia Southern were sophomore Danielle Shaurette from Buford, Ga. and freshman Kellie Wessin of Douglasville, Ga.

Total time for the Eagles was 1:39:02.15 for an average of 19:48.43.

 

“In two weeks we’re going into conference meets.  It’s a short meet, but it will prepare us for conference competition” commented Smith.    “I’m happy with how we ran today and if we continue as we are, continue to get closer as a team, we should see a lot better finishes.”

 

Georgia Southern will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to compete in the UTC Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14.  Race begins at 3:30pm.
