SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today named its Football Players of the Week for games played on October 7. Georgia Southern’s Travis Clark was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Appalachian State’s Corey Lynch earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Furman’s Jordan Surrells earned the Freshman of the Week award.

yards and a touchdown in a win over Elon. The quarterback broke Tracy Ham’s record of 26 completions in a game, set against East Carolina in 1984. Clark’s 375 yards are the most since Ham threw for a record 419 yards against Furman in the 1985 National Championship game. He also connected with Reggie McCutchen on a 62-yard completion in the fourth quarter, part of his 159 yards in the final 15 minutes. Clark’s 375 yards are the most in the SoCon this year.

 

Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Kevin Richardson, Chattanooga’s Eldra Buckley, Western Carolina’s Darius Fudge and Wofford’s Josh Collier.

 

Lynch, a junior from Cape Coral Fla., anchored the Mountaineer defense in a 14-7 win over Wofford on Saturday. The defensive back turned in his best performance this year with a career-high 13 tackles, topping his previous high from his freshman year.  Lynch also blocked a Wofford 34-yard field-goal attempt with 9:39 left to play to preserve a 14-7 ASU lead.

 

Other top performers include Chattanooga’s Chris Camacho, The Citadel’s Terrence Reese, Elon’s Chad Nkang, Furman’s Jeremy Blocker, Georgia Southern’s Branden Daniel, Western Carolina’s Mitchell Dukes and Wofford’s Justin Franklin.

 

Sorrells, a redshirt freshman from Greenville, S.C., led the Paladins to a 23-17 win over The Citadel on Saturday. The quarterback made his first collegiate start against the Bulldogs, throwing for 251 on 20-of-31 passing. Sorrells start was the first by a freshman quarterback at Furman since 1997 and his passing yards were the most by a freshman quarterback since that season.
