Davidson 3, Wofford 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. Junior Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) had her second multi-goal game of the season with two second half markers and assisted on another in helping lead the Davidson women's soccer team to a 3-0 Southern Conference win over visiting Wofford on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson, who earned its sixth shutout win of the year, moved to 3-2 in SoCon play and 7-5-2 overall. Wofford dropped to 1-4 in league action and 4-6-2 overall.
Koehrn busted out of her six-game scoreless streak in a big way with her two goals and an assist for five points. She came into the contest leading the team with 10 points on her five goals and was tied for eighth in the conference.
The junior's two goals in the second half made sure Davidson would earn its fourth home win of the year, but it was Koehrn's assist in the 11th minute of the game that helped the Wildcats get on the board first.
After nearly 10 minutes of neither team getting a shot off, Koehrn and her teammates capitalized on a Wofford mistake. The Terriers tried to clear the ball out deep in their part of the field, but freshman Katharine Laco (Bethesda, Md.) stole the ball and feed it to a streaking Koehrn down the left sideline. The junior then sent a cross to the middle of the box where sophomore Tracy McCausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) gathered the pass and fired in her fourth goal of the season at the 11:11 mark for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage. The goal was McCausland's third in her past four games.
Davidson wasted no time coming out of halftime, making sure Wofford would not have a chance to tie things up by netting its second goal seven minutes into the stanza. Koehrn got her first marker of the game at the 51:37 mark when freshman Courtney Hart (Ashland, Mass.) earned her second straight assist on a perfectly placed cross. Hart sent a cross down to the six-yard box, where Wofford's goalie Becca Maloney tried to dive and stop it, but the ball went just under her arms and right to the foot of Koehrn, who easily netted her sixth goal for a 2-0 Davidson lead.
Koehrn capped off her excellent scoring outburst by taking advantage of another Wofford mistake in the 58th minute. The Terriers defense let a ball find its way back to Maloney in goal where she tried to clear it, but instead shanked the ball off her foot and Koehrn was right there to steal the miss-hit and blast a shot just inside the 18-yard box for her career-best seventh goal of the season to cap off the scoring.
Davidson came away with a 16-3 advantage in the shot column, while picking up nine corner kickers and not allowing Wofford a single attempt.
Junior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) pocketed two saves and secured her fifth shutout win of the year. Maloney recorded one save, but was forced to leave the game with 23 minutes remaining after colliding with freshman Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) on a break away. Sharayah Davis replaced Maloney and registered three saves in finishing out the game.
Davidson hits the road for its next two contests, first traveling to UNC Greensboro on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2:00, before finishing up at College of Charleston on Oct. 19 at 7:00.
