Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Southern Conference today named Elon football player Wes Pope as the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 11.

Pope, a junior quarterback from Jamestown, N.C., was named the Southern Conference Offensive Football Player of the Week this week after throwing for a career-high 296 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 37-19 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. The win was the first SoCon victory for the Phoenix since November 13, 2004.   The quarterback tied his career-best with three scores while completing 24-of-33 passes without an interception, including a career-long 62-yard pass to Terrell Hidgins. Pope leads the league in passing yards per game, total offense and is among the leaders in passing efficiency.

In the classroom, Pope carries a 3.32 GPA and is a double major in exercise sport science and psychology.  He was named to the 2005 Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team.
