Freshmen Condon and Wheeler Represent Mountaineers at Bobcat Open

October 7, 2006 - BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Under muddy conditions, freshmen Chase Condon (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Josh Wheeler (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) represented Appalachian State University, both placing in the top-ten in the Bobcat Open on Saturday, October 7 at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
Condon completed the 4.1-mile course in 23:07, crossing the line in fourth place amidst a field of 25 athletes. Wheeler crossed the line in ninth place (23:45).
In spite of wet conditions, the athletes did not let the weather affect the race.
“All the athletes enjoyed themselves out there today,” said head coach Michael Curcio.
Appalachian State did not have a team score, with only two Mountaineers competing in the race.
The Mountaineers will return to action with a full squad in the last home meet of the season as ASU hosts the Blue Ridge Open on Friday, October 13th, with races starting at 5 p.m.
Two Mountaineers Place in Top-10 at Bobcat Open

October 7, 2006 - BANNER ELK, N.C.?Boone-native Ashley Norris led a trio of Mountaineers on Saturday, October 7, placing fourth in the Bobcat Open at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
Norris completed the 5,000-meter course in 21:45 under inclement conditions. Following Norris, Heather Goldstein (Mullica Hill, N.J.) placed seventh (22:30) and Boone-native Danielle Cullen finished 12th (24:00) in the 24-athlete field.
“This course at Lees-McRae is always very challenging,” said head coach Michael Curcio.
The Mountaineers did not have a team score, with only three athletes competing in the race.

Brooks and Hunter finish in top-20 at Gardner-Webb Duals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Bryan Brooks and Justin Hunter led the Terriers with top-20 finishes at the Gardner-Webb Duals on Friday, Oct. 6.
Brooks ran a 20:28.0 to finish 15th in the 6k run, while Hunter posted a 20:47.4 to finish 20th. The 20-second spread between the two is the shortest of the year for the men’s team.
Brooks, who earned a medal last week for his 13th-place finish at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Hoover, Ala., finished in the top-20 for the second consecutive meet and the third time this year.
The Terriers will travel to Greenville, S.C., next weekend (Oct. 14) to compete in the Furman Invitational, their last meet before the Southern Conference Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Bosshardt finishes eighth to earn third top-20 finish
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Lauren Bosshardt earned her third top-20 finish of the year with an eighth-place outing at the Gardner-Webb Duals on Friday, Oct. 6.
Bosshardt’s time of 16:26.9 in the 4k was less than half a second slower than the seventh-place finisher, Charlotte Farquharson, who finished with a 16:26.5.
Sophomore Sarah Whitener, who ran in the No. 2 spot for the Terriers, finished with a career-best time of 18:02.0.
The Terriers, who finished sixth in the competition, will travel to Greenville, S.C., next weekend (Oct. 14) to compete in the Furman Invitational.

The Citadel Cross Country Men Finish Fourth, Women Ninth at Walt Disney World Classic
Orlando, Fla. ? The Citadel had a banner day in cross country Saturday morning as the Bulldogs’ men’s team finished only three points out of third place while the women recorded a ninth place finish out of 42 teams at the prestigious Walt Disney World Classic in Orlando. Seniors Matt Holmes, Will Wilson and Charles Kutz all ran personal record times while Laura Hewston had the top women’s time.
Holmes shattered his previous personal best, knocking 40 seconds off that mark as he ran 25:54.33, placing 10th. Wilson finished 12th as he ran a personal best time of 26:02.21 while Kutz ran a PR time of 26:36.85 as he finished 30th. The men’s team finished fourth overall, falling just three points short of a third place trophy finish at the meet. Central Florida won the race on the men’s side.
On the women’s side, Hewston was the top finisher for The Citadel with a 19:49.76, 39th place finish. Sophomore Sarah Strickland finished 50th, running 20:01.58. Freshman Katheryn Gatewood ran 20:05.12 to finish 53rd in a field of more than 285 competitors.
