UNC Greensboro 37, Davidson 9
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro wrestling team picked up two impressive wins Friday as the Spartans claimed a 37-9 win at Campbell before returning to Fleming Gymnasium to defeat SoCon rival Davidson 38-12.
The Spartans opened their day with a dominating 37-9 performance at Campbell to improve their record to 4-0. UNCG claimed eight of the 10 matches which included four by pin. UNCG posted back-to-back pins in the 133 and 141 lbs. weight class as both Chris Bencivenga and 17th-ranked Kevin Artis pinned Caleb Lesnoff and Elliot Berger respectively in less than two minutes.
In the 174 lbs. weight class, Joe Lowe continued the Spartans’ winning ways as the junior pinned James Amsley in 1:16. Tyler Shovlin, the 12th-ranked wrestler in the 285 lbs. weight class, capped off the Spartans’ win over Campbell with a pin in 5:55 over Jeremiah Fennell.
Having not wrestled in over a month due to injury, junior and 15th-ranked Daren Burns picked up an 8-4 victory in the 197 lbs. weight class over Jason Cook to run his record 7-4. The Catawba, NC product is now 3-1 in dual match competition.
Following the 28 point victory at Campbell, the Spartans returned home and posted a 38-12 win over SoCon rival Davidson to improve their record to 5-0, 1-0 in the conference. With the win over the Wildcats, the Spartans improved to 14-0 all-time against Davidson.
The Spartans once again got dominating performances from Artis and Lowe as the duo combined for UNCG’s only two pins of the evening. In the 141 lbs. weight class, Artis pinned his opponent in less than two minutes for the second time of the day, this time defeating Drew Carey in 1:17. Enjoying his second pin of the day, Lowe pinned Sam O’Hair in 2:09 in the final bout of the evening as UNCG was victorious in the 184, 197 and 285 lbs. weight class by forfeit.
Bencivenga added another outstanding performance as the Davie, FL native posted a 22-9 technical fall victory in the 133 lbs. weight class. The sophomore is now 13-6 on the year and has yet to lose in dual match competition (5-0). Junior Andrew Krieger added an 11-0 major decision victory over Matt Leonard in the 149 lbs. weight class as the Spartans cruised to the 26 point win.
UNCG returns to the mat Saturday, January 14 when the Spartans travel to Edinboro, PA to take on head coach Tom Shifflet’s alma mater, Edinboro, at 5 pm.
Chattanooga Competes in Lone Star Duals
ARLINGTON, Texas --- The wrestling team claimed three out of four matches Saturday at the Ninth Annual Lone Star Duals, defeating No. 18 Wisconsin, Army and Harvard.
UTC defeated Wisconsin 19-18, outscored Army 25-9 and bested Harvard 27-15 before dropping a 26-14 decision to the U.S. Naval Academy in the team’s final dual of the meet.
With the Mocs trailing 18-16 against Wisconsin, UTC’s Israel Silva defeated Lee Kraemer 8-2 in the heavyweight match for three team points and the one-point Mocs’ victory.
The Mocs (5-5-1) won three straight matches to open the dual with the Badgers. Javier Maldonado defeated Collin Cudd 4-3 at 125 pounds, Matt Keller beat Tom Clum 9-5 at 133 and Michael Keefe defeated Ed Gutnik 8-2 to give UTC a 9-0 cushion.
Justin Otis scored a 14-4 major decision over Seth Garvin at 165 and John Davis defeated Matt Maciaq 6-1 at 184 for the other Mocs’ victories.
Maldonado and Keller were the only two UTC wrestlers to win each of his four matches. Maldonado also defeated Army’s William Simpson 11-8, won by forfeit against Harvard and scored a 13-4 major over Navy’s Alex Usztics.
Keller, nationally ranked as high as No. 7 this week, pinned Army’s Whit Dunning after his decision over Wisconsin, won by injury default against Harvard and outpointed Sean Knapp of Navy, 12-4.
Keefe and Jake Yost (157) each won three matches for the Mocs, who compete next Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.

Keydets Compete in Virginia State Duals
HARRISONBURG, Va.- Old Dominion captured their championship since 1993 while VMI took third at the 2006 Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championship, hosted by James Madison at Sinclair Gym on Saturday.
ODU tallied 115.5 points and Virginia finished second with 101.5. Virginia Military Institute came in third with 55.0 points followed by George Mason’s 42.0 and JMU’s 40.5.
The Monarchs saw five grapplers claim individual titles, highlighted by senior Adam Wright’s third consecutive title at 184 pounds. Wright, who also posted 100th career victory on his way to the championship bout, became the 17th grappler in the tournament’s 36-year history and the first since Virginia’s Craig Fenstermaker accomplished the feat in 1999.
The Keydets got runner-up finishes from junior Sam Alvarenga at 149 and sophomore Tommy Cunningham at 157. Also coming up with third-place finishes were senior Chris Hardy at 165, Dustin McCabe at 174 and Corry Murray at 184, while Brandon Stillo (133) and Scott Buhman (285) turned in fourth-place performances for VMI.
ODU’s Steve Martin was voted Coach of the Year.
